A1 Advances Allergies Corvallis - Significant ad vances in the understanding of allergies and new tech niques for study of the bother some reactions that affect about one person out of 10 have been reported by Oregon State university scientists. They have developed a new theory on the way that a per son becomes allergic and have made volunteers allergic In the manner predicted by the theory. Tho task of . finding the exact mechanism by which a person becomes aller gic is a complex one, but the OSC studies are considered among the most promising in the nation. Findings will be reported by Dr. Arthur Lietzc, head of the project in the OSU Science Research Institute, be fore the ' American Chemical Society March 27 in St. Louis. The OSU workers believe they have proceeded far be yond other research groups in isolating in pure form the allergen compounds from grass pollen and house dust two major allergy problems since It is almost impossible to avoid either. And almost White House Secretary Outlasts Presidents Washington -(UPD- A secre tary, If she is good, frequent ly lasts longer in trie wnue House than the President. Such a woman is while haired, smiling Mrs. Harold P. Ganss, who now works for President John F. Kennedy after doing secretarial stints for former presidents - Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Communications System lor Home Introduced Here A new home communica tions system that enables a person to answer the front door or mind the baby over the telephone has been intro duced by ' Pacific Telephone Northwest in Mcdford, ac cording to local manager J H. CrcBBor. The new system, called Home Interphone, works en tirely through telephones. Be sides door-answering and elec tronic baby-sitting features, it provides a variety of services such as hands-free talking and broadcasting by voice through out the house. "The new Home Interphone is a real first - permitting a wide range of intercom serv ices plus the handling of out side calls from every phone in the house," Crcnger said. "It has been designed lo make life easier, safer and more en joyable for the family."- The new system uses special extension telephones to per form the various telephone, broadcasting and Intercommu nication services. The equip ment, consisting of a tele phone and a small separate speaker, is available in a va riety of colors. Door-answer-Ing la carried out through an outside microphone - speaker combination: The control unit and transformer which pow er the system are Installed in the basement or other out-of-sight location. "The system is particularly useful in emergencies, such as reporting a fire or accident, calling for help, or telling the family to vacate the house In the event of a serious fire," he pointed out. Home Interphone has a life time, guarantee, with repairs and maintenance provided by the telephone company at no cost to the customer, ho said. There is an installation and a monthly, charge for the new system. A variety of telephones can make up Home Interphone, in cluding desk phono and wall phone, at well at the new Princfis phoni. NOW WHEN SHE WON VJ Made Understand in OS Ufs Research unbelievably small amounts of the allergy compounds will bring reactions in some peo ple, Dr. Lietze pointed out. Allergy reactions include hives or eczema on the skin, hay fever, or asthma. Great Difficulties One of the great difficul ties in the study of allergies is that there is no supply of experimental animals with al lergies although occasional ly one hears of an allergic animal, usually a household pet, Lietze explained. The re suit is that all experiments have to be performed on hu mans, and many experiments which might cause permanent harm to the individuals are ruled out, he added. Lietze and other OSU sci entists are now trying to make rabbits allergic to tim othy pollen. If the experi ments are successful, it will be possible to select allergic type rabbits for breeding and eventually to obtain a colony of highly allergic rabbits which could be used for new types of studies. Tendency li Hereditary The tendency to show aller- As a holdover from the "Old Frontier," Mrs. Ganss Is better known to reporters than most other Kennedy ad ministration staffers. She used to put in long hours working for former White House Press Secretary James C. Hagerty. Now she puts In even longer hours working for lndefatlg able Press Secretary Pierre J. Salinger. Mrs. Ganss went to work in the White Hounse in 1049 on the staff of Gen. Glen . Edg- crton, He was masterminding renovation of the building. When It was completed she Joined the staff of President Truman's Press Aide, the late Joe Short. A native Washingtonian, and therefore without a vote, Mrs. Ganss has no politics. She says she can be "loyul to my boss." But then she adds with a twinkle, "everyone should be loyal lo the Presl dent, no matter what his party." Mrs. Ganss, who sits in front office and cheerily greets newsmen every day, said that there arc shades of ex-President Trumnn in Ken nedy's outgoing appruach. She said that Mr. Truman used to pop into her office every once in a while and "I couldn't be lieve my eyes." . Now President Kennedy Is apt to stroll in looking for Salinger. Mrs. Ganss' reaction: "It's still n thrill. I still get wenk-kneed." On the other hand, cx-Pres-Idcnt Eisenhower was not giv en to wandering around look ing for his aides. There arc other similarities between the Truman Era and the early days of the Kenne dy Regime, she snid. Busy is the word for both. Considerate Mrs. Ganss said the two past Presidents were consid erate of their stuffs and fre quently would invite them over for receptions, along with members of their family. She sulci It was fun to share the excitement of being enter tained by the First Family and that she brought along her husband and her son, H ir- old Jr. Once the Ganss trio went up to the Army-Navy game with ex-Presldenl Truman and the Man from Missouri walked up and down the train talking to everyone, Just like he was John Doc." Mr.- Truman once confided to her that he would "be Rind when people didn't feel that they would have to jump up when ho walked into a room. When a UPI reporter de cided to Interview Mrs. Ganss, she explained her smile: 'I have a wonderful hus band, a fine son and a very nice Job." ' gy symptoms, is hereditary, findings of other research groups have shown, but the actual substances to which a person becomes allergic seem to be entirely a matter of chance.' A father, for example, may be allergic to one food; his son. to another. , . Many people who get aller gy symptoms after eating food are shown by skin tests not to be allergic to that food, it was noted. They apparently are al lergic to the digestion prod ucts of the food and it is only after .the food has been par tially digested that symptoms occur. The project at Oregon State was initiated by Dr. Charles E. Reed, Corvallis physician and staff member of the Uni versity of Oregon medical school and the. OSU Science Research Institute. He is in charge of all tests involving hurrian volunteers. - - Oregon Stale has received grants of $60,000 during the past four years for the aller gy research.
