After Middle Life I must keep urging people to pay great attention to any pain that appears for the first TJtl time to a per. ft' Clsii I son past mid dle age. Here on my desk Is a sad letter from a fine woman who begs me to keep writing about this subject. .She Alvarez says that if she had only known two years ago that a new pain appearing in. her abdomen shortly after her sixtieth birthday, could . mean cancer, she would not now be sitting In her room waiting for death to come for her. . , When the little pain came, she could stand it easily, and so for many months., she did nothing about it. Then, one night, it woke her out of hor Bleep and for a few minutes Was severe and cramping. She changed hor diet and 'when this then seemed to cure the pain, she thought she had solved her problem. The pain returned but, again, she let months go by. She kept hoping the pain would clear away. 5 Only when she began to Jose weight did she get alarm, ed enough to see a doctor Unfortunately, he was so ter ribly busy he could not give her more than a few minutes, When she admitted she was very nervous and very tired from taking care of her hus- band who was 111 at home with a bad heart, he gave her a tranquilizer and told her to come back If the medicine did not work Blood Noticed Because It seemed to help her, she let another three months go by. Then she began to notice some blood In her bowel movements. The doctor found she was anemic and gave her some Iron. Later, when she was no better, he sent hor for an x-ray examination which revealed a cancer of the bowel. A surgeon remov ed the growth but he found that it had scattered through the abdomen and the liver and so it was too late. As the lady says in her letter, how different It would be for her today If, when the distress first came, she had known that a new pain at 00 commonly means cancer. If only sho had gone Immediate ly for an x-ray examination she could be well and safe today. Another point she makes is that she probably would be well today If she Unci only known that the time to get rid of a cancer Is when you feel strong and well and look perfectly healthy. If you Wait until you are thin and sallow and weak, it Is gener ally too lato. Somo years aso' In n num. bcr of Medical Schools, an effort was made to gel hun dreds of apparently healthy peopic-wiuioiu any minis or aches or Indlgestion-to come In and have their stomachs , and bowels x-rayed. As the doctors expected, a number of cancers were found, but what was heart-breaking was that most of the persons Involved refused to do anythlno nhnwi the terrible threat to their lives. To them, the unanswer able argument was, "But I do not feel sick." Again, I must emphasize the fact that If a man wants to avoid death from cancer he must have the. growth found and remov ed when he still feels well and strong and is the picture of health. Anticoagulant Treatments In the last few years ex perts on diseases of the ar teries, heart attacks and strokes have been giving many of their patients a drug of a cumarin type which re duces the tendency of the blood to clot in the blood ves sels. The patient has to take one or more pills every morn ing, perhaps for the rest of his days. It is wise every few weeks to have his blood tested to see what the so-called prothrombin time is. Tills is a measure of the effect of the drug on the clotting of the blood. A number of papers have been published giving statis tics on the comparative inci dence of recurrences of trou ble in the persons who look the drug and those who didn't. For instance, a recent study by Drs. P. R. Kuhn, A. Van Ness; R. J. Jones and Bar bara J. Helmslctter, of Chi cago, shows that among 583 persons who had a heart at tack, and who have now been watched for periods up to two years,- the incidence of re current attacks and of sudden death has been only halt as high among the treated per sons as among the untreated. The mortality rates of the two groups were 13 per cent and 26 per cent respectively. Home Care of Many Psychotic Patients In Boston, Dr. Walter E. Barton, working in the region of Dorchester where there are some 100,000 inhabitants, has found that 50 per cent of mild ly psychotic persons can be cared for adequately in homes Doubtless this enn be done with the help of visiting psy chiatric nurses. Most of the persons who are too danger ous to be handled In homes are the paranoid schizophren ics who get the Idea that peo ple are persecuting them.
