Roseburg had the toughest lime. The Indians were down 26-25 at halftime and led Douglas by only 39-38 at the end of the third period. Jim Jarvis led the attack with 20 points and Ron Lake scored 12 points and had 19 rebounds. Wilson, which outrebound ed Jesuit 64-37, ran up a 30 23 halftime lead and never was headed. Jeff Johnson top ped Wilson's scoring with 16 points and Jim Smith had 12 points and 14 rebounds. South Salem had trouble but Medford posted the tour nament's easiest win in the afternoon session. The Saxons, ahead 33-31 at halftime, spurted to 59-44 at the end of the third period to beat Bend. Quinney Top Pointmaker McArthur Court, University of Oregon, Eugene-Medford High school star Bob Quinney was the high individual scorer of the first round of the Ore gon Class A-l basketball tour nament here and shared top honors in 'rebounds. Quinney tabulated 27 mark ers against Tillamook for the scoring laurels. Larry Enos, Corvallis, ran second with 23 and Dave Lester, La Grande, tallied 21. Al Zell, Grant, to taled 20 as did Jim Jarvis, Roseburg. The Black Tornado's Quin ney and Roseburg's Ron Lake each collected 19 rebounds. Pete Slabaugh, Corvallis, had 16, Gary Patzke, Klamath Falls, 15, Ed Maerz, South Salem, and Jim Smith, Wilson, each 14. and Stan Dowson and Steve Hoots, Medford. and Bruce B r i c k n e r, Klamath Defending Champs See Saxons Next By DICK JEWETT Mail Tribune Sports Editor McArthur Court, University of Oregon, Eugene - Medford High school's Black Tornado, bearing proudly and awesome ly the standard of defending champion, moved into the quarterfinals of the Oregon Class A-l prep basketball tour nament by whirlwinding to the most decisive triumph of the opening round. One of the most impressive teams to take the floor as 16 aggregations from eight dis- j tricts debuted in this 43rd an nual sports classic, the rip roaring Tornado from the Rogue Valley swamped the Tillamook Chccsemakers 65 to 32 here Wednesday after noon. Tillamook jolted the Big f Wind with the game's opening thunder but Medford flared up in stern retaliation before the first quarter was far gone and romped into complete charge with a 22-point second session. A solid and blazing team effort got the victory job done but it was big 6-4 Bob Quinney, an all-state se lection, sparking the way. He scored 27 points, picked off 19 rebounds, helped set up his mates for scores and time and again broke with the ball from the melee under the hoop to assure that Medford would retain possession. Rebounding Support Quinney had strong re bounding support from Stan Dowson, Steve Hoots and Dick Ragsdale. Jim Barry and Rags- dale, and also Dowson, were Chcesemaker anihilators with their ballhawkings and steals and Bruce Bray gave the Hur ricane some rugged strength. The verdict sends Coach Frank Rollandt's Medfords against South Salem at 7:30 o'clock tonight in the quarter final round. Tillamook met Bend this morning in the con solation bracket. A fast, quick South Salem quint, with the sharpest shooting effort of the tourney's first round, over came Bend's Lava Bears 68 to 57 in the fray that followed Medford - Tillamook conten tion. Hoots Scores Tillamook's jolt was a full- court press which enabled the Cheesemakers to grab with surprising suddenness a 6 to 0 jump on Medford. Leon Thompson put in two gift tosses for the 'Mooks when the scrape was 10 seconds old. Wayne Hill goale:! off a swipe from the press anr! this de 'ensc pave Tillemook the Nill frr another buc'tet that Alex U'-f??-; honked thrrugh. With the game a minute along, Hoots put in a jumper from the side for Medford. Quinney added two free toss es. Mark Sather dunked a reboundcr for the coast club and the count was 8 to 4. Then Quinney's jumper from the circle was countered on Hof fert's fast break shot off a swipe. Hoots plunked a Tor nado rebound and Quinney swished a pusher from t h e baseline to knot the score at IKQUNOES 10-all witli 3:19 left in the quarter. Dowson's push from the side on Ragsdale's assist and another Dowson bucket from a Quinney feed took the count to 14 to 10, Medford. Thomp son hit from the corner and Hoffert got a tip-in for 14 each with 30 seconds left. Ragsdale's free cast made it 15 to 14, Medford, at the quarter. Medford's fast - running gang streaked away like light ning in the second panel and coach Tony Dooher's Cheese makers were not again in con tention. Quinney led off the period with a jumper and a rebound basket. Barry, a pes ky thorn in Tillamook's side, stole the ball twice at this stage and drove for layups. Ragsdale tallied off a fast break he, himself, had started by retrieving a loose ball. Medford headed 25 to 14. Three More Quinney got three more field buckets and two free shots in the quarter. Barry sank his own rebound and Scott Eaton drove the base for a goal as Medford ran to a 37 to 19 halfway margin. Thompson on a fader and Sa ther on a rebound hit from the field and Sather collected a free toss in a meager five point quarter for the District 4 champions. The Tornados from District 6 continued in charge to ex tend to 54 to 26 by the third intermission. Although scor ing pace slowed in the early fourth stanza, Medford stretched to a 34 point differ ence of 64 to 30 for its widest gap. (Continued on page 2C) Penney's Downtown Medford Falls, each 12.
