MEDFORD, ORE. 12 A- Student at OTI Gets Scholarship Jesse Floyd Dressier Jr., son of Capt. and Mrs. Floyd Dressier, 883 Old Stage rd., is a recipient of the Associ ated General Contractors scholarship at Oregon Tech nical Institute, Klamath Falls. He is a fifth term student in highway technology and an honor student at OTI. A graduate of Jacksonville High school, Dressier is a member of Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. His wife is the former Elizabeth C. Falk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Klumph, 248 Ben son st. The couple has two sons. Plastic Used to Remove Dreary Sights of Industrial Plants By HENRY J. The coating, urethane, pro- vides a sparkle that lasts for years, and a surface that is virtually abrasion - proof and scratch - proof, according to manufacturers of the plastic. Outlasts Paint Myron Bryant, president of Better Finishes and Coatings C6., a Dixon chemical subsidi ary, said this unusual plastic lasts four times as long as ordinary paint and gives a glossy hard covering that can be cleaned with very little effort. A number of large indus trial firms have already turn ed to the new plastic to ex change somber exteriors for a fresh, long-lasting gleam. (UPI Telephoto) Manufacturer Says Investment Opportunities in Europe Expand sales of the new urethanes have moved up from $1 mil lion in 1058 to more than $8 million last year. Bryant noted that plants using chemicals or acids are particularly impressed with the new plastic because it can not be corroded by accidental spillage. And trucks and tank ears carrying chemicals or acids now are beginning to acquire urethane coats to pro tect against spillage damage. A prime example of this switch from a somber tone to pastels is Du Pont's chamber works in Deepwatcr, N. J. Decked in light green with touches of yellows and reds, the plant now glistens by day light or floodlight. Maintenance men chose a light green to hide streaks that were bound to show up on parts of the unit. Apparently one of the chemicals used in the process finds a way to seep through even the tightest joint, and slight green staining had continually shown up here and there. But, Du Pont said, when you can't lick them, join them. They painted her green. Contrasting colors also were used. In normal opera tion heat had turned several joints a light color, so the maintenance men simply pick ed an ivory-colored urethane finish to coat these parts. And they touched up platform edges and stair edges with the same color. Control valves were coated with international orange. And all of Du Pont's normal safety-code colors were used -red for fire boxes, dark green for safety showers, yellow for potential hazards. The urethane coating has been on the plant unit nine months and is holding up well according to Du Pont. It noted that a good rainstorm will take off any surface dirt and "leave the place sparkling." The pastel color scheme has been a bonus for plant oper ating personnel as well. Unanimously, they agree the plant is a better place to work in, particularly at night when the coating adds brightness that was impossible when the plant was shrouded in black. Urethane coaling originally was developed to service mili tary equipment but was found to have much greater utility in the industrial field. Bryant foresees a wide application of the plastic in the domestic and home-consumer fields. Other applications of the plastic presently include floor finishes, wire coatings, inside coatings for pleasure boats, and coalings for rubber toys. College Receives Health Service Training Grant Corvallis - A new research and teaching program in mi crobial genetics will be added in the Oregon State university department of bacteriology July 1 under a $176,000 train ing grant from the U.S. Pub lic Health service. The five-year grant pro vides for addition of a highly trained staff member to head up the microbial genetics work and for four fellowships each year for outstanding graduate students. In announcing receipt of the grant, university officials pointed to the increasing im portance of microbial gene tics. Much of the basic re search In genetics is being conducted with microorgan isms at present because they reproduce so rapidly that re sults are obtained much more quickly than with larger an imals and plants. Greater knowledge of the genetics of microorganisms will be a key also to progress in the fight against infectious diseases, it was noted. Dr. Paul R. Elliker, chair man of the bacteriology de partment, and Dr. K. S. Pilch cr developed plans for the new program of work. The grant came from the Infec tious diseases section of the Public Health service. Training in microbial gene tics will be given in the bac teriology department at both undergraduate and graduate levels, Elliker said. Students majoring in various related fields-biochemistry, zoology, parasitology, botany, and plant pathology for example also will benefit from courses in this field, he added, as will graduates going into state, government, and industrial laboratories dealing with pub lic health problems. The bacteriology depart-ment-which will change its name to the department of microbiology in July-received special equipment grants totaling $24,000 last fall from the Public Health service and is now one of the West's best equipped centers for research on microbiology, Elliker re ported. New York-(UPD-The Invest ment opportunities for Amer ican business in Europe still are growing tremendously and so are the chances of finding valuable new products for the American market. That is the belief of William P. Lear, chairman of Lear, Inc., who spends about half his time In Europe and main tains a home at Geneva. Right now, Lear said, Euro peans are somewhat afraid Americans will curtail invest ing In Europe because of a desire to check the gold drain and the baliince of payments deficit. "This would be terribly short-sighted and would undo much that has been accomp lished tor the free world's In the last 15 years," Lear said. "If wo look back far enough and then try to lake a look forward, we can see Hint American Investments abroad have virtually nothing to' do with the balance of payments deficit." Hospital officials noted there were now more than 150 Industries and agencies in the metropolitan area using such materials. Last year there were several Incidents where persons working with these material! had to be hos pitalized for some reason. Any person exposed to radio-active substances would bo scrubbed and decontamin ated before receiving medical or surgical treatment.
