A Title GEORGE CLEARWATER Ashland Hoop Coach Resigns ' Ashland - Earl Iba, Ash land High school basketball coach, has resigned his coaching duties but will re main on the faculty as so cial studies teacher. The announcement was made yesterday by Stanley ,Jobe, city school superinten dent. In announcing the resignation, Jobe said Iba definitely had not resigned under any pressure from school officials. He praised the work Iba has done with athletic teams. Iba's basketball teams have lost 38 straight games over a two year period. He came to Ashland as coach five years ago. Jobe said he has the highest regard for Iba's ability and added that Ashland will have dif ficulty in finding another coach of his caliber. 1st Methodist Tightens Grip On YMCA Lead First Methodist, led by Phil Humphreys with 21 points, thumped Eastwood Baptist 64-28 In YMCA High School Church league basketball play Monday night. The Methodists retained first place In league play with an 8-1 mark. Eastwood is in the cellar by virtue of a 1-7 season record. First Baptist retained sec ond place by whipping First Christian 31-20. Gary Olson paced the Uatptist attack with 10 points. Leonard Welch had nine for the losers. Christian led 12-8 at halttimc. St. Lukes was awarded a forfeit victory over Westmin ster Presbyterian. St. Lukes now has a 4-5 mark. And, while the Hurricane of the Rogue valley goes as District 6's No. 2 representative, it is given as much chance as any other aggregation in the 16 -team scramble of annexing the championship trophy. The Tornado, in fact, is re garded as one of the favor ites in the big school cage classic being held again at University of Oregon's Mc Arthur court in Eugene. Med ford, too, will bear special Joe Allison Champion Joe Allison, Rogue River was winner of the National Rifle association pistol sec tional tournament held here yesterday under the sponsor ship of the Medford Rilfe and Pistol club. His total score was 845 out of a possible 900. In the in dividual matches he won the rapid fire and three stage na tional course and was first in the master class in the slow and time fire events. Runner up and high master was Colonel Frank Graham, Medford, who totaled 839 and was winner in the slow and time fire matches. High expert was Joseph An derson, Roseburg with 810, second expert Don Dilling ham, Rogue River 806; high sharpshooter Ed McGlnty, Medford 785, second sharp shooter Ray Jones, Yreka, 738; high marksman Rate An ders, Medford, 787, second marksman Wes Van Buskirk, Ashland. 778; high unclassi fied William Ducan, Yreka, 804; second unclassified, Tom Sensabaugh, Grants Pass 798. The Rogue River team of Allison, Dllllnham, Tom Sen- esabough and Lowell McKen zie totaled 1085 to win the 3 stage team event. Opening action in the tour nament is slated for tonight but Coach Frank Roelandt's Tornadoes go north a day ahead of their opening skir mish. They begin their title defense at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Tillamook, champ of the Tualatin-Yamhill Valley circuit (District 4). Third Time Winner of that game will advance to 7:30 p.m. Thurs day play against either South Salem o r Bend. Loser will take on the South Salem- Bend loser at 11 a.m. Thurs day. Medford will encounter Til lamook for the third time this season. The Big Wind thump ed the Cheesemakers here 44 to 27 and 69 to 33.. These were the third and fourth setbacks of the slate for Tillamook but the crew from "the land of cheese, trees and ocean breeze" caught stride to com pile a 16-6 mark and suffer only two setbacks in the TVY. The Tornado goes to Eugene with a 17-5 record. This is the 23rd year Med ford has had a state basket ball tournament entrant. Black Tornado cagers seek the fourth diadem for their school. Coach Roelandt is tak ing a Medford club to Eugene for the seventh time. On his squad are just three of last year's titular gang. They are all-staters Bob Quinney and Dick Ragsdale and Jim Bar ry, who drew all-conference honors along with the other two. Leading Contender A strong windup of its Southern Oregon conference campaign has established the defisnders as one of the lead ing contenders in the tourn ey. Medford wrapped up its regular season by thumping league champion Klamath Falls and knocking the Peli cans from their No. 1 Oregon prep rating. The Tornado, consequently, was accorded No. 5 spot in the ratings while pulling the Pels to No. 3. As a result there Is no clean cut single favorite in the tournament. Klamath still ranks as a top entrant. Unde feated Grant and Wilson, Roseburg, Central Catholic and Bend are among clubs with favored backing. Coach Roelandt said last night that the Medford start ing five likely will be Bob Quinney, Jim Barry, Stan Dowson-, Dick Ragsdale and either Steve Hoots or Bruce Bray. Hoots, who sprained an ankle almost two weeks ago, was running failrly well in scrimmage yesterday when the Tornado had its final home dr411. Roelandt said that Jim Barry, who turned his ankle in the Klamath game, the last one of the season, ap pears at full strength. Cheesemakers Belter Others on the tourney squad will be Mike Hood, Scott Ea ton, Bob Mclntire and George Clearwater. In a telephone interview yesterday, Tony Dooher, coach of the Tillamook club, rated his Cheesemakers "vastly im proved" and "much better than when they met the Black Tornado In December. He stat ed the belief, however, that his team is not of the caliber of the Tornado and that, should Tillamook beat Med ford, it would be a "big up set." Leon Thompson, 6-2, Alex Hoffert, 6-3, Mark Sather, 6-5, Wayne Hill, 6 feet, and Gary Brunes, 5-9, are the possible coast team starters with Gary Spencer, hefty 6-foot all-state football tackle, the No. 1 re serve. Thompson has scored 321 points for Tillamook, Sa ther 267 and Hoffert 245. Hof fert and Sather have been the top rebounders. Tillamook has a young team and six varsity men, will be back next season. Pair Rope Steer In 6.9 Seconds Rogue Valley Ropers chalk ed up some real good times at the Jackson county fair- arounds Sunday. Choose-for-partners winners were Lee Hancock and Ray Bernard, 8.4. Then Earl Head and Dick Perry won the next with 7.1 only to return In the next to make the best time of the day in the steer roping contests with 6.9 seconds. There were five draw-for-partner contests with winners as follows:. Dick Perry and Earl Head, 9.2; Bud Tucker and Dick Perry, 16.0; Lee Hancock and Al Muse, 10.9; Carl Flncher and Bud Tucker, 11, and Bud Tucker and Walt Kurz, 16.9. Calf roping was led by Gordon Moxlcy, Eagle Point, with 17 seconds. President Larry Perry an nounced a business meeting March 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Trallways cafe. KMED sportscaster Don Hanlin is serving as one of the announcers at the A-2 state tournament at Coos Bay. Mountain Men Conduct Shoot After firing a few practice shots out of Nick Nixon's barn windows, the Little Butte Mountain Men got their muz zle loader shoot underway with a full head of steam Sunday. Match 1, one shot for cen ter for women was taken by Dorothy Henagin who fired a .44 caliber Ohio rifle for the first time. In Match 2, a strange rifle shot, Al Oster- man was victor. In the event contestants exchanged rifles and fired a single shot for center. Another one-shot for center event was Match 3, copped by Jerry Henagin. Nine-year-old Danny Osterman, using a .32 caliber squirrel rifle, claimed Match 4, a three-shot group. In Match 5, a three-shot group offhand trophy affair, Joe Williams was victor. The tro phy must be won three times for permanent possession. Other three - shot group events were Match 6, won by Keith Henagin and Match 7, nabbed by Bill Fitzsimmons. Henagin had to break a tie with Fitzsimmons in Match 6. Bob Varney was the winner of Match 8, a one-shot affair for persons who had not yet won a prize. Match 9, con cluding the shoot, was anoth er one-shottcr and was taken by Al Henagin.
