Kenne dy's proposed increase for lev ies on heavy trucks was criti cized at Friday night's meet ing of the Southern Oregon Conservation and Tree Farm association. Kennedy has requested higher taxes on diesel fuel, trucks over 26,000 pounds, tires, inner tubes and rubber used for retreading. The meas ure is designed to get the fed eral highway program out of trouble. The President said that passenger cars are paying more than their fair share of the costs of the high way network. Darrell Davis, local logger and chairman of the SOCTFA trucking committee, said this proposed tax increase would mean an increased tax cost of $17,290 to his fleet of trucks. The proposed state legisla tion for removal of the flat fee option would mean a $29, 000 tax increase, or a combin ed state and federal tax in crease on his fleet of trucks totalling $46,290 for one year. This would average out to a $2,000 tax increase per truck, Davis noted. Bill's Proposal Senate Bii! 33 proposes to remove the fi;i; roe option for payment of weight mile tax presently extended to trucks hauling logs, poles, piling and dump trucks. "There is a decided differ ence between highway and logging trucks' operations," Davis pointed out. "Logging trucks get smaller mileage on their rubber and diesel ou. Logging trucks use secondary or county roads entirely and not federal highways as do the highway trucks." Reporting on legislative hearings the committee had attended recently, Davis noted that the required certificate of necessity for log hauling under Senate Bill 18 had been withdrawn at tile union's request. However, a majority of the senate committee considering the bill seems to favor the bill, so we will probably hear from it again,' Davis remarked. Leilen Writien Davis noted that the local lumber industry had written RESERVE WEALTH London - Iran is believed to hold one-third of the world's petroleum reserves as welt as vast undeveloped mineral wealth. ! several letters to She state leg islature as requested opposing Senate Bills 18 and 33.
