OREGON, SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 1061 First Skiesta Elaine Tonkin, College of the Siskiyous, Weed, Calif., chosen queen of the first College Skiesta held recently at Ml ShaMa Ski bowl, is shown here with part of her "subjects." Pictured (left to right) are President Elmo Stevenson of Southern Oregon college; Dan Bulkley, SOC faculty member who helped organize the Skiesta; Barry Pitts, Klamath Falls, SOC student body president; Howard Sanborn, SOC science teacher and ski enthusiast and his young son, Mike, who enjoyed the snow and sun. Nearly everyone at the Skiesta, whether or not a skier, took at least one ride up the south face of Mt. Shasta on the aerial lift. Pictured are SOC students Elizabeth Prahman, Ashland (at left), and Laurene Espey, Medford, enjoying the spectacular view of Ml. Shasta and the surrounding area, a snow fairy land in winter. Those who go "just for the ride" and do not ski back are known as "tourists." Larry Robin (left) and Harold Winfield, SOC students from Bly, Ore., received their registration cards from Jonietta Smith, Cottage Grove, another SOC student. Students from the four participating colleges, SOC, the sponsor, College of the Siskiyous, Weed, Humboldt State, Eureka, and Oregon Technical institute, Klamath Falls, received different colored cards for identification. Skiing is a strenuous sport and even the experienced stop occasionally to catch their breath and lo chat with fellow enthusiasts.
