MARCH 12, 1961 Ohio Team Has Lead in American Bowling Congress Tournament Detroit - (UPO - Five teams moved into the top ten in Quinney A-l First Team All-Stater Portland - (l)PII-Two Kla math Falls players have been named to the Oregon Journal's all-state class A-l high school basketball team. Bruca Brickner, a 6-7 center, and Wally Palm berg, a guard, were select ed from the P e 1 i c a n s' Southern Oregon confer ence champion squad. Other members of the all-state squad were Med ford's Bob Quinney, a 6-4 4 forward; Grant's Al Zell, a 6-4 forward, and Jim Jar vis, a guard from Rose burg. Named to the second team were Bo Blair, South Eugene; Jim Smith, Wil son; Larry Enos, Corvallis; Rod Young, Lake Oswego, and Rick Whelan, Milwau-kie. regular division competition at the American Bowling Con gress tournament Friday, but once again the famed classic division failed to live up to its billing as bowling's profes sionals. Stu'i Drive-In of Urbana, Ohio, maintained its lead in regular team play with 3,027, but ' was threatened by the Bowlers 300 Club of Chicago which settled for second with 2,084. The Bowlers club had gam es of 1,052, 1006 and 926 Fri day night. Tri-State Printing of Steu benville, Ohio, moved into third with 2,864, the Cooper Shows of Chicago seventh with 2,882 and Uptown Bar of Kenosha, Wis., tied Archbald Vending of Archbald, Pa., for ninth with 2,864. Three classic division clubs saw action Friday night. The Muncie All-Stars of Muncie, Ind., closed out their six-game effort with a 2,884 set and a 5,616 six-game total. Central SPring 3-6450 MEDFORIvSWrRIBUNB SIPdDMTS Ragsdale Heads Tornado In Shooting Averages; Tourney Jaunt Awaited Medford High school's tour nament-bound defending state A-l champion basketball team, led by the sharpshoot ing of all-conference player Dick Ragsdale, compiled .415 field and .662 free tosses shooting average in chalking up a 17-5 win-loss record dur ing the 1960-1961 season. Ragsdale headed the Black Tornado in field shooting average with a .472 mark and in free heaves with .839 over the 22-game route. He made 92 of 195 tries from the field and 47 of 56 attempts at the gift line. Second high in both accuracy departments was Medford's 3 ALL-CONFERENCE Jim Barry, whose part in Med ford's second place finish in the Southern Oregon confer ence, earned him all-league second team honors, will be one of the stalwarts on whom the Black Tornado' pins its hopes this week in defense of the Oregon Class A-l bas ketball championship it won last year. Medford meets Til lamook on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in its first game of the 1961 tourney at Eugene. Quinney one of the top scorers in Oregon prop circles made 165 of 356 field tries and 107 of 138 free chances. His total goals and his total free points each were high for the team. Dowson Third High Third high in field goaling averages was Stan Dowson with .423 on 52 of 123 All league Jim Barry shot .418 and Scott Eaton aiso was over .400 with .409. Eaton was third high in free heave aver ages with .708 and Barry, who finished with a tremendous rush of 27 tosses without a miss, had .688 for the cam paign. Medford "made 539 field goals in 1299 tries and 380 of 574 attempts from the free line dropped through the hoop. Black Tornado Coach Frank Roelandt gave his charges a week end rest as they looked toward their Oregon Class A-l tournament game against Tillamook at Eugene on Wed nesday at 2 p.m. Medford's hoopmen laid off yesterday and rest today after a drill on Friday. They will work out here Monday and will go Tuesday to Eugene. Pep Assembly There is no school at Med ford high this week. So, the students gave the team its send-off with a pep assembly on Friday. Medford defeated Marsh field in the 1960 tourney finals. Quinney, Ragsdale and Barry are the only returnees from the titular squad. In Tillamook the Tornado faces a club it laced 44 to 27 and 69 to 33 in games in De cember which concluded Med ford's pre -conference slate. The Cheesemakers since have risen to the championship of the Tualatin-Yamhill league crown. B 5 Saturday Games 'New' Senators Win Grapefruit Opener Pompano Beach, Fla. - lUl'U The new Washington Senators made a triumphant debut Sat urday, even though their op position was second-grade, by following the slugging of Marty Kcough and Pete Daley to a 7-5 victory over the Kan sas City Athletics' "B" team. Knuckle-ballcr Tom Sturdi vant became the first winning pitcher for the Senators, the new club formed for the na tion's capital when the old Senators moved to Minneapo-lis-St. Paul.
