OREGON "Oregon-grown guaranteed farm-fresh" IllBIODBfllBBBOOII II El a B a m B B n B n a b y a Survivor of Nazi Gas Chamber To Be Witness at Trial of Adolf Eichman Jerusalem - (ITU - Yehuda Bakon, a rising young Israeli painter and art teacher, is one of the few Jews known to be alive today who went into Nazi gas chambers and came out alive. Bakon is one of 39 persons listed to testify at the trial of Adolf Eichmann for the murder, torture and degrada tion of millions of Jews under Hitler's Jewish extermination program. Like the rest of the 39, Bakon did not know until he read the list of witnesses in the newspapers that he was to be called to testify at the Eichmann trial, now sched uled to start April 11. He and others were among hundreds interviewed by police in prep aration of evidence against the 54-year-old former Nazi officer. They had not been told of their selection as trial witnesses. No Indications in Paintings The soothing pastoral scenes of (he Jerusalem coun tryside now painted by Bakon contain no indication of the terrors to which he was ex posed as a boy. At 31, he will be the youngest w i t n e s s against Eichmann. Bakon, born in Czechoslo vakia, was 13 years old when he was sent off to the Re siendstadt concentra tion camp. A year later he was transferred to the Auschwitz" death camp where he saw his father murdered. He was ship ped later to the Malhausen concentration camp where he remained until the end of the war. At Mathausen the boy had job - to go into the cas chambers and strip the dead oodles ot gold teeth. Even in the death camp, the boy painted. He relates that he once was offered a half a loaf of bread by a cainn euard for one of his paintings. He has lived in Israel since 1946 and his paintings have been exhibited in the United States, Britain and South Africa. Another Artist Scheduled Another among the 39 in dividual witnesses will be Esther Luria, also now an ar tist. She had traveled from Palestine-to Belgium in 1939 to study art. That summer she went to visit relatives in Lithuania and was there when it was occupied by the Rus sians. Then came the Nazi conquest. For three years Mrs. Luria was kept in the Kovno Ghetto. She ceaselessly paint ed what she saw and was known as the "Painter of the Ghetto." Regarded as one of the most important witnesses against Eichmann is Dr. Benno Kohn, one of several due to be called who had personal contact with Eichmann in the Nazi years. The 66-year-old last president of the German Zionist organi zation first saw Eichmann in 936 at a Zionist meeting in Berlin, which Eichmann at tended as a Nazi party ob server. "He received a shove in the belly from the crowd," Kohn says. "He remembered this and mentioned it to me when I went to the prison recently to identify him." Kohn saw Eichmann the second lime in 1839 when Jewish leaders were ordered to appear before the Nazi offi cer to be told the details of an "emigration office" being established for Berlin Jews. No Mistaking When he saw him in his Israeli prison there could be no mislaking Eichmann, Kohn says. "The man had of course grown older, but there was no mistaking his eyes, his fea tures - they were unforgettable." Kohn described the "three phases of Eichmann" as he saw him. "In 1936, he made the im pression of a young careerist who was using the Jewish problem as a stepping stone to success. By 1939 he was an important man, drunk with power. Now. In prison, he is a polite, docile, broken man." Others among the witnesses who met Eichmann In his Nazi heyday Include Moshc Igami, 53, a Latvian. As a spokes man for his village he went to see Eichmann in Vienna in 1938 hoping for permission to establish camps to train young Jews for pioneer work in Palestine. "I confess," he recalls, "that the first time I faced Eich mann I shook with fear." Agami also went to Eich mann's prison cell to identify him. "I recognized him on sight - an older and now de jected man. I spoke to him of our meeting in Vienna. He did not recognize me." To Be Hostage Mrs. Hansi Brand also met Eichmann in his days of power and still shudders at the recol lection. She is the wife of Joel Brand, another scheduled witness who was part of a committee that dickered with Eichmann for the release of 1,000,000 Jews in return for 10,000 trucks. The deal did not come off. "My husband introduced me to Eichmann," Mrs. Brand re members. "Eichmann coldly trahsfixed me with his eyes and said indifferently, 'Your husband is going to Istanbul. You are remaining here as hostage." Leon Kapon, 45, is among the scheduled witnesses who never saw Eichmann. But he, too, shudders when he speaks of "those days." Whispering so that his wife and ' two young daughters nearby wouldn't hear him, he told UPI that he would testify about the death camps. "Do you know." he asked, the terror still reflected in his face, "that at Auschwitz they experimented on living people until they went mad with agony?" Kapon bared his arm to show the bluish concentration camp number tattooed on his forearm. "I was at Birkcnau, Ausch witz and Mathausen," he said. "Forty of my family died. I was a good worker, so I lived. For 20 hours a day working on roads, we sometimes got just a slice of bread." lV tV''wc N i (UPI Telephoto) YEHUDA BAKON To Be Trial Wilnesi Five Car Prowls Reported To Police Five car prowls were re ported to Medford police Wed nesday, most of them in the Mary st. area. Police said the cars were entered sometime between Tuesday night nad Wednesday morning. Included among the items taken from the cars are a camera, flashlights, gloves and soft drinks. If Man Sent To County Jail For Burglary Jean Noel Wright, 21, of 2352 McAndrews rd., was sen tenced to 90 days in the coun ty jail Wednesday by District Court Judge L. L. Sawyer. Wright was charged with burglary not in a dwelling involving theft of a pair of jeans from Robinson Brothers store March 1.
