Ashland Branch 337 Home Office 2 East Main, Medford 232 Small Worlds The Spider Monkey Has No Thumb Most of the monkeyfolk have hands similar to ours, four fingers and thumb. The exception is the spider mon key of South America; nature shortchanged him by giving him the fingers but complete ly leaving off the thumb. Probably the spider mon key does not miss its thumb; never having had one, he has no idea what he's been miss ing Whoever coined the phrase, "keeping him under her thumb," certainly realized the importance of the thumb. This, the thumb, is the short est, thickest and the strongest of the digits, Unlike the fing ers, it has only two phalanges, or what we commonly call joints. Useful Hand With fingers extended, the thumb only reaches to the palm; but with the fingers bent in the position of hold ing, squeezing or grasping, the thumb is exactly in the right position to oppose the fingers, making the hand about the most versatile and useful in strument in all the world. The hand's usefulness is increased by the opposable thumb. It makes the human hand and that of most of the monkeys the handiest gadget with which man or monkey is en dowed. The position of the thumb Is why our hands are so adaptable; Just try to pick up a coin or pluck a hair from your coat collar, and you will realize the importance of the thumb. Perhaps you haven't appreciated it all you should. Big Toe The card player who says, "I have a hand like a foot," means it's no good; he may not have analyzed it, but the big toe on his foot is equiva lent lo the thumb on his hand. But it's not opposable; there fore, the fool lacks the useful ness of his hand. The thumb, cither man's or monkey's, is even equipped with a "nail," which acts as a screwdriver or a pair of tweez ers or for a hundred other purposes such as a handy im plement for scratching the back of his neck. Man has it all over the spider. monkey like a lent be cause of this opposable Ihumb. Birds have a "thumb" loo; the tip of each wing has a small member that is called a Ihumb. Look for it the next linie you see a "defeathered" chicken. The first digit on an ani mal's fnrepaw is also a thumb. But man's and monkey's are East Main, Ashland ,r'"i, 41 If 1 m Around Us By Lynn M. Watkinj (Reenter and Trlhun Syndicate ' 1961) the important ones. Nothing ever devised can approach the hands in efficiency or com plexity. The human hand is the most adaptable gadget in the world, and all because of what the poor old spider mon. key doesn t have - an oppos able thumb.
