EP Lions Donate
$418 for Building
Eagle Point-The Eagle Point
; Lions club presented a $418
check to the Scout-Community
building fund committee
Monday night. The money
will be used for construction.
Mrs. David Kahl, commit
tee treasurer, accepted the
check She reported that mon
ey raised at last Sunday's
benefit smorgasbord dinner
totaled $231.42. Between 325
and 350 people attended the
dinner. After bills were paid,
a balance of approximately
$350 remains in the building
fund tr .sury, Mrs. Kahl said.
Ed l.niimel reported that
about $700 will be needed to
buy required cement, steel
supports and materials for
completion of floors in the
building.
To dale, all material and
funds for purchasing mate
rials have been donated by
merchants, organizations or
private citizens in the area.
Harry Hanscom, building
committee chairman, said $3,
500 has been used in con
struction so far. A total of
$1,500 is needed to complete
the building Hanscom indicat
ed. He pointed out that all
labor for construction has
been volunteered. Hanscom
said that a complete list of
labor and donators will be
acknowledged when the build
ing is completed.
Stamp Campaign
Mrs. Virgil Hayes reported
on the trading stamp cam
paign. More than half of the
stamps necessary for an elec
tric range have been collect
ed. Coupons for 35 piece set
ting of silverware have been
obtained. More than half of
necessary coffee bands for a
coffee maker have been col
lected. Collection of stamps
and coupons will continue un
til the building is as com
pletely furnished as possible,
Mrs. Hayes said.
Work details will start at
8 a.m. on Saturday and Sun
day, March 11 and 12. Work
to be done will include paint
ing, window replacements,
hanging of doors, stapling the
ceiling panels, pouring ce
ment steps and digging and
installing the septic tank. All
help possible will be appre
ciated, Hanscom said.
Hanscom said that mate
rials for interior cabinets in
the kitchen are available.
Anyone wishing to make cabi
nets can contact either Han
scom or Ed Kimmel.
The building will be avail
able free of charge to all
youth groups in the commu
nity when completed. Youth
groups have first priority
with adult groups being able
to use the building only when
it is not being used by young
people.

The override tax and oth
er financial matters vital to
the ichool will be discussed
and explained. All commun

Williams School Has New Classroom
William s Second and
third graders at Williams
school are mighty proud
these days. They have a brand
new classroom and they make
no attempt to hide their en
thusiasm. Some of them have been
counting the weeks and days
since the school year started,
anxiously awaiting the day
when they would be able to
"move in."
Previously, their room was
located in the school base
ment whore space, light,
warmth and pleasant sur
roundings were termed in
adequate. Many of the third
grade group had already
spent more than a year there.
Upon moving into the room
with windows on the entire
north side, one child ex
claimed, "Now mom and dad
can't call me their educated
gopher!" In checking this
story, it was revealed that the
child has spent nearly three
out of four years of school in
basement classrooms, begin
ning with an out of state
kindergarten.

these new tenants, reports
reveal.

Minstrel Show
Set for March 4

for the valleywide minstrel
show to be given at Ruch
school gymnasium Saturday,
March 4 at 8 p.m. Proceeds
will go to the Medford Red
Cross chapter.
Jimmy Mitchell and a group
of musicians from McLough-
liri Junior High school will
provide music before the
show. Boys participating are
Seldon (Skippy) Vansickle,
Paul Jenney, Gary Clark, and
Billy Warren. Boyd Gibson,
Ruch principal, will extend
greetings and tell of the ori
gin of minstrels.
. Fifty persons are participat
ing, with 25 voices in the
Negro chorus. Mike Loftus is
interlocutor. A number of
vaudeville acts and vocal
numbers will be included in
the program, making a show
of an hour and half duration.
"Topsy" will be portrayed by
Mrs. Frank (llelga) Mitchell,
and Forbes Brown and Clar
ence Roloff will impersonate
Amos and Andy. The show is
directed by Mrs. Edna
Sawyer.
Mrs. Otis Buck, Red Cross
chairman for the Applegate
district, will have charge of
donations at the door. Re
freshments will be served fol
lowing the show. Many from
Medford and other communi
ties are expected to attend.

Receives Scholarships
Janssen Awarded
Two Scholarships
Applegate - Larry Janssen
of Applegate was recently
awarded a National Merit
scholarship and a four year
scholarship to Dartmouth uni
versity. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. D. Janssen.
The Merit scholarship is
based on scholastic achieve
ment, while the Dartmouth
scholarship was awarded for
scholastic and athletic ability.
Janssen is a senior at Grants
Pass High school.
He has been 1 active in
speech and athletic activities.
He went to the state finals in
tennis singles last year.
The Dartmouth scholarship
docs not require that Janssen
continue sports activities. It
does require that the student
maintain a high scholastic av
erage, and does not marry un
til he is over 21.

hired Mrs. Mary Ann Mitchell
to serve as an additional
teacher for the remainder of
this school year.
An all-lime high enrollment
figure of 128 and average
daily attendance of 115 make
the school eligible for a filth
lonelier. Mrs. Mitchell will be
gin her duties at the end of
this week.
She is the widow of Fred
Mitchell and is a registered
nurse. She has been active in
Siskiyou county art affairs for
a number of years.

Friday's windstorm at Brown
Brothers Lumber company
near Williams were estimated
at between $750 and $1,000
when the side of the waste
burner was flattened.
Lee Brown reports the mill
is still operating and the metal
burner has been pulled out
and tied down until further
repair can be made.
A large oak tree toppled
over at the Robert Rippee
ranch, blocking the road and
downing telephone wires serv
ing the cast and west forks
of the Williams area.
Trees were blown across
Blodgctt rd. and interrupted
both telephone and electrical
service to several residents in
that area. On the Walter
Scholer ranch, a shed was
totally wrecked when a tree
fell through it.
The only other damage re
ported were roofing losses,
trees uprooted and broken
fences.

tional parliamentary proce
dure and public speaking con
test held in the Eagle Point
Grade school gym last week.
Central Linn placed first
in parliamentary speaking,
with Crater of Central Point
second, Eagle Point third and
Albany fourth. Members of
the Eagle Point team were

Hawkins, Dale Vaughan, John
Patrick, Ron Anderson, Ever
ett Adamson and Don Pcstka.

6 Juveniles Admit

Wallace Bowen reports a total
of six Juvenile boys were tak
en into custody recently for
destruction of property.
They admitted repsonsibll
ily for the breaking of win
dows in the American Legion
hall, the Eastside Cleaners and
a vacant dwelling in that Im
mediate vicinity. They used
rocks and air rifles, which
were confiscated. The boys
were remanded to their par
ents for further disciplinary
action.
