JFK's Personal
Staff Pledged
To Keep Secrets
Washington -UPD- All of
President and Mrs. Kennedy's
personal staff have signed doc
uments promising not to sell
or tell any details of their
relationships with the first
family, the White House dis
closed today. The ban came
out indirectly as reporters
questioned press secretary
Pierre Salinger about reports
that Mrs. Kennedy had at
tempted to hire a cook, Bui
Van Han, from the French
embassy in London. The
White House said this report
was inaccurate because the
Kennedy's found the existing
White House staff was excellent.
Name Withheld
Salinger was asked to iden
tify the chef who was held
over from the Eisenhower ad
ministration. He declined, say
ing he understood it was tra
ditional not to give out the
name of the man so employed.
A reporter observed the this
anonymity lasted "until a
cook or a valet decides to sell
his story to a magazine."
Salinger quickly interjected
that all members of the per
sonal staf had signed docu
ments since Jan. 20 promising
that they won't sell their
stories to magazines or other
publications."
Know of No Parallel
Those signing the docu
ments included domestic help
at the White House, most of
whom are government civil
service employees, and Mrs.
Kennedy's three secretaries.
Asked whether the "docu
ments" covered telling their
stories without being paid,
Salinger said, they agreed not
to discuss any of their perso
nal relationships with the
President or Mrs. Kennedy."
Veteran reporters knew of
no parallel in the past for
this documentary agreement,

Quotes From the News
By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
San Diego, Calif. Cmdr. W. E. (Pappy) Sims, skipper of
the Navy's newest Polaris submarine, the USS Theodore
Roosevelt, discussing his vessel's name:
"It is so symbolic that she should ba named this. That
little saying of Roosevelt's ('Speak softly by carry a big
stick') tells of what we are trying to accomplish with de

Jacksonville, Fla. James Cochran, on the disappearance
of his wife a year ago in one of Florida's most baffling
missing person cases:
"I've heard that time will heal everything, but I have my
doubts. I'm more adjusted to living alone now, but I still
have memories."
New York Mrs. Edith Kiecorius, voicing her fears about
her 4-year-old daughter who has been missing since Wednes
day: "I only pray that whoever has my little girl loves chil

Santa Barbara, Calif. Candy company president Russell
D. Albers, proposing that coffee breaks be replaced by candy

"A top executive earns about 40 to 50 cents a minute. So
a 10-minute coffee break is costing his company between $8
and $10 a day or around $2,000 a year."

One of Cadillac's greatest attributes is its innate balance.
Under any driving condition, the car's poise is a con
stant source of satisfaction. Threading your way through
traffic or leisurely cruising along back roads, your
Cadillac rides you smoothly and steadily so that road
irregularities are almost imperceptible. Balance is the
key to its precise and effortless control, as well and
to the wondrous silence of its great engine. Your Cadillac
dealer will be happy to let you prove with a ride these,
and the many other virtues of the Cadillac for 1961.
