But as their 1 ereea cieany shows, they are intensely m o notheislic. M o h a m mcd i never .claimed to be, and has never been regarded by ! Moslems as, n y thing tassels more man a; human prophet, .The founder of Islam was born in the Arabic city of- Mecca about 570 A.D. As a ' driver with a camel caravan ho made several trips to Jeru salem where he became fa miliar with Judaism and Christianity. Mohammed drew freely on these older faiths in formulating his own teaching. He taught that Jesus was a great human pro phet but that his life was cut short before he could com plete all his work, so God called forth another prophet Mohammed to finish the job of revelation, The new revelations which Mohammed said were given to him in a cave near Mecca were written down in a book called the Koran. Moslems accord this book the same rev erence that Christians accord to. the Bible. They regard it as the word of God. Changed Arab Belief The principal religious in sight of the Koran that there is one God, who is a compassionate father to all mankind will hardly sound like a new discovery to those raised in the Judaeo-Chrisllan tradition, But it was an excit ing new thought to' the Arabs of Mohammed's day, whose religion was a primitive poly theism In which the one mod erately benign god Allah was outnumbered by a horde of malevolent "jinns" and demons. The Koran spells out a Mos lem's religious and moral ob ligations in explicit detail. The religious duties are pri marily these: -i s s . 1. To face Mecca and pray five times .each day at sun rise, at noon, in the early aft- ernoon, at sunset and at the all of darkness. 2. To give 2't per cent of j one's weulth to the poor each year.- v . v '." 1 I This is not 2V4 per cent of annual income, but of all the property that a Moslem owns. 3. To fast during the holy month of Ramadan, ninth month of the year on the Ara bic calendar. Fasting means going without any food or drink not even a sip of wat er from sunrise to sunset. 4. To make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a life time. I don't need anything to make me more nervous than I already am, and I'm scared of tran quility. . Once or twice a year, in moments of black despair, 1 may take an aspirin or two, but I always live to regret it. T Bot the stomach-ache. Sleeping pills are out of the question. I react all wrong. All they do is give me night mares until the alarm rings. Then I get drowsy. Once dur ing the war I took two sleep ing pills for psychoneurosis and slept through an impor tant battle. So it was something of a catastrophe the other night when I got out of bed and took two sleeping pills by mis take. I thought they were as pirin. It was one of my semi annual moments of despair. I no soooner got back un der the electric blanket than I began dreaming I was being thrown out of Harvard for playing basketball without any clothes in the girls' gym nasium. It's one of my re current nightmares. Then the dog began to bark. I've tried everything to break him of this, but noth ing does any good. He sees phantoms in the night. He nev er barks at anything substan tial, such as the neighbor cat. which I despise.' I've managed to train him down from a so prano to a baritone, though. Now he barks sotto voice. While I was dressing to leave Harvard, he began this low bark of his which sounds like the baritone role from the Rigolotlo Quartet. I al ways get to humming the so prano role in my sleep and can t sleep. .. , . I got up and went outside and hit him a couple of times with Life magazine. Then I noticed that my old regiment was drilling by ranks and files in the street. I got in my usual place, only men aia x realize I was wearing noth ing but my pajama top.. Gen. Shoup, the cammandant of the Marine Corps, was standing under the streetlight playing the lute. Three Harvard girls were turning handsprings. I went back to bed and turned up the electric blanket. The dog began barking. This time it was the Rudolpho role from "La Boheme" whore Mi mi is dying of consumption. I tried humming the Mimi part, but it always sets me to cough ing. I got up and went outside! and sal in the patio to give the dog a sense of security. It dawned on me gradually that my wife was entertaining the PTA ladles in the patio. They were barbecuing the principal. I realized I was on ly wearing house slippers. I went back to bed and woke my wife up. "Can t you sleep? she said. "I am sleeping," I told her. I took a couple of aspirin." "You couldn't have," she said. "We're out of aspirin." 'I look something," I said, sitting up in alarm. "What d'you suppose it was, for the Lord s sake" 'It must have been the sleeping pills," she said. 'I'll die!" I cried. "I didn't know we had any." ; 'You bought them last sum mer," she said. Moslems, who believe in God, and Communists, who do not, would appear to be divided by a basic and irre concilable ideological differ ence. But as Nasser has proved in the United Arab Republic, and as events in the new Negro republics like the Congo are now demon strating, this difference does not necessarily preclude a certain amount of mutual co operation. X Moslems and Communists have this in common each Is convinced that his ideology will eventually triumph throughout the world. There fore each is willing to enter into a temporary accommo dation with any body that seems likely to further its long-run objectives. Islam and international communism also have in com mon an historically demon strated willingness to use vio lence, if necessary, to advance their causes. . More than a thousand years ago, during the first "golden era" of Islam, Mos lem caliphs spread their faith at sword's point across the entire reach of North Africa and into Spain. ' Threatened Western Europe Until Charles Martel de feated their invasion of France at Tours in 732 A.D., it seemed that all of Western Europe was destined to be come a province of Islam. Today Islam is no longer winning converts as it did in the 8th Century by confront ing them .with the choice of proclaiming their faith in Al lah or having their throats cut. It is winning them throughout Africa by doing more zealously the same kind of missionary work- that Christians are doing on a feebler scale, and by ap proaching the task with a more acceptable record on the all-important racial .issue. But there is no reason to believe that Islam' -has fore- sworh violence. The Koran does not say anything about turning the other cheek. It specifically condones- ven geance against those who have inflicted a wrong or in jury. , ' And. it says that any Mos lem who - dies in a holy war is assured of immediate en try into heaven.
