Short UP1 Story Reunites Father, Son in Texas Dallas, Tex. - OCT - It was just a short, short story, 39 words to be exact, on the United Press, International wires, but it had wiped away 20 years today for Larry R. Stratton and his father. Larry, 28, is a station agent for Branlff International Air ways in Dallas. His father is Jerry R. Stratton of Piqua, Ohio. This is the story the elder Stratton read in the Piqua Call: "Dallas, Tex. fUPB All four kids came back today, but it's' still mighty quiet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry R. Stratton. Their children, Angela, 5, Pamela, 6, Denlse, 7, and . Donna, 9, all had their ton sils taken out Tuesday." He called the news editor of the Call, and was adviBed to write to UPI at Columbus, Ohio, which sent his letter to UPI in Dallas. Stratton said he believed that the man in the story mlBht be his son, born in 1933. whom he hadn't seen since 1941. The Dallas UPI office lo catcd Larry Tuesday. "I euess I'm the man," Larry said. "The last time I saw my father was when I was eight years old, In the Trail ways bus station in Dal las. My mother was putting me on the bus and i just nap pened to run into him." He explained that his moth er and father had "broken up" and he went to live with rela tives. His mother now is re. married, but he said he didn't know his father had re-married, or where he was. "You know," Larry said, "It's real funny. I've always worked around airports. Everytime I'd see somebody who looked like him (his fa ther) I'd stop and look close." Larry telephoned his fa ther Tuesday night. They plan to have a reunion soon. Dog Licenses Are Due on March 1 All dog owners must pur chase dog licenses by March 1 to avoid the $2 extra charge or late penalty, according to the countv clerk's office. Mrs. Afton Carter, of the clerk's office, noted that dog license collections are $9uu behind what they were last year.1 ' She also noted that people are buying their licenses more willingly this year, possibly due to the Influence of the dog control ordinance now in effect in Medford and some other precincts in the county. Whole Stores May Turn More to Price Competition Soon Davis, Calil - (UPD - The attempts of supermarkets to outdo each other with costly customer services may give way to more direct price com- f petition, according to an econ-' omist at the University of California at Davis. D. B. DeLoach, in a re search report titled "Changes in Food retailing," said super markets may not be able to squeeze much more competi tive advantage from bettor service alone. He said that more than 90 per cent of the nation's gro cery sales are made by about 30,000 large supermarkets and 60,000 medium sized ones. . Most of these stores offer non essential services to the cus tomer - such as notions, lux ury items, check cashing serv-. ices or elaborate display fa cilities. Exhausted Many retailers suspect that the competitive advantage of these services is already ex hausted, he said. Price specials often are of fered when the retailer gets an extra-low price from the " wholesaler or the farmer, De- Loach said. "The vast supply of food products since World War II. including surpluses in manv crops, has kept prices to the farmer and the wholesaler rel atively low," he said. 1 This fact combined with the prosperous consumers' will ingness to pay more for food has given retailers a wide co t margin which has been filled with service costs. But, DeLoach added, the housewife may yet find she prefers more food and less service in her market basket.
