Three Appear in Circuit Court Imposition of sentence was suspended for three years for Joyce Lee Ann Johnson, 19, of 204 South Grape St., in Jack son county circuit court Tues day. bhe pleaded guilty to charges of forgery. Brian Mul len was appointed her attor ney Thursday, and the case was continued. William S. Warren, 2532 Table Rock rd., was. sentenced to two years, eight months in the Oregon state prison for obtaining personal benefit un der false pretenses. He had pleaded giulty to the charges. Warren is charged with pre tending to Regal Service Sta tions that he was authorized to charge $62.75 in purchases to the credit card of Heavy Haulers, Dallas, Tex. The case of James Earl Raines, 425 Oak St., Central Point, was continued until Monday for arraignment. Raines was charged with en tering a Gold Hill repair shop Dec. 1. Thomas Reeder had been appointed previously by the court to represent Raines. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. French Scientists Recover Capsule Colomb Bechar, Sahara (UPD - French scientists suc cessfully recovered a capsule containing a rat that was fired to an undisclosed altitude to day aboard a rocket, officials announced. It was not known immedi ately whether the rat was alive or dead. Official sources said the container was recovered 27 miles from the launching pad by means of a radar-spotting system and a helicopter. - The helicopter brought the capsule back to the rocket launching base near this West African desert market town. W.irM tlthU i Grants Pass Man, Son Die in Wreck Weed, Calif. - IUPD - An Oregon man and his 7-year- old son were killed Tuesday in a three-car accident which injured three other persons. The dead were identified as Gordon Willard Ring, 44, of Grants Pass, and his son, Dennis. Ring's wife, Hilda, was critically injured. Also injured were Mrs. Helen Nic- odemus, 53, and Oliver F. Fredrickson, 51, both of Duns muir, Calif. Highway patrolmen said Mrs. Nicodemus's car bumped the rear of another vehicle and sideswiped Ring's auto, which was heading in the op posite direction on Highway 99. Ring's car hurtled down a 30-foot embankment. House Committee Tackles Problem of Extra Jobless Pay Washington - (UPD -The House Ways and Means Com mittee started Tuesday to pound out a final version of legislation to speed extra job less pay benefits to the na tion's unemployed. The committee, led by Rep. Wilbur D. Mills (D-Ark.), was expected to complete its work on President Kennedy's emer gency request within a few days. House action may come early next week. The legislation also would provide $350 million in federal-state public assistance for needy children of the unem ployed. Chappcl (R-Portland) has in troduced a bill that would provide payments of $7.50 a day to any person held in a county jail or otherwise de tained as a witness in a court action. Present law provides $1.50 per day. Chappcl, a Portland detec tive, said this would correct situations similar to the re cent incident in Jackson coun ty where material witnesses were held for "prolonged periods at $1.50 a day solely because they witnessed the commission of a crime." He said he is introducing a total of 14 bills to help reduce the crime rate in Oregon.
