Censorship Isn't the answer. Somehow we have to find a way of attract ing better people to the field of collateral material. I find not much to criticize In our textbooks, except the attitude that history, biology and other academic studies are essentially dull and can be made palatable to eager young minds with colored pictures and cute writing. , The real damage is being done in the area of comic books, joke books and other types of off-beat reading mat ter which doubtless do more to shape the social attitudes of the rising generations than Caesar's commentaries on the Gallic wars, Keats, Shaw, Kant and Shelley. Today's writers don't know how to handle sex, violence and humor. Most of the stun you . find children reading these days, wnen tney are sup posed to be reading geogra- phy, Is badly written. Our children are certain to grow up with weak concepts of sex, violence and humor, . "The other day I caught one of my boys reading a book called "School Daze." It was supposed to be a joke book, I believe. Here's one of the jokes I found In It. Miss Jones was teaching fractions to the class and de cided to use a steak as an example, it began. i "If I cut a steak into four parts," she asked, "what do I get?" "Quarters" answered ihe class. ' "And If I cut those pieces In half?" - "Eighths," answered t h e "What do I have If I cut those pieces In half again?" S "Sixteenths," replied the cjass. i '' "Now suppose I do It once more?" Miss Jones went on. ''What do I have then?" ' A voice from the b,ack of the room answered firmly, "Hash." : There U is. An example of the clumsy, clrcumlocutlonary prose that is inflicted on our young. Very badly done. ' In the first place, steak cut (nto 32nds doesn't make hash. You have to put potatoes into It to make hash. This confuses children and starts them off with a phony idea of what hash is. It s especially hard on girls, who will have to make hash some day. - With just a little more imagination, the teacher could have said that by cutting steak into 32nds and adding chives, sour cream and mush rooms you would have beef strogonoff. ... Besides, it's a much better joke with apples, and can be told shorter. Teacher: I have an apple. If I cut It In two I have halves. If I cut the halves in two what do I have? .'Class: Applesauce. The same Idea is conveyed in less time, and all you have to do Is add a. little sugar and cook It IB minutes over a low infra-red burner. Agents Advise Tree Spraying in Valley County Agents Clifford Cor- dy and David Passon advised local fruit growers to spray fruit trees as soon as soil and weather conditions permit. "Due to the current warm weather, the trees are budding rapidly, in fact, unseasonably fast," Cordy noted. "The bud ding is considerably ahead of normal, but not ahead of 1958 when the buds developed ear lier than in any previous year on record." With early bud develop ment, it is important to apply dormant spray as soon as pos sible, Cordy said. The pear psylla are out and active, and have laid eggs, Cordy noted. Unless soil and weather con ditions are unfavorable there is no reason to delay spraying, he pointed out, Passon said the same ad vice applies to peach trees. Control sprays should be ap plied for aphids, peach blight, leaf curl and possibly mite eggs, and scale.
