The bill was requested by the slate Board of Control and its primary purpose is to allow tccn-agcrs in Correction al schools under 18 to smoke. 1955 Law Repealed The main argument was (hat the law forbidding sale of tobacco to those under 18 is not enforced "on the out side" and young wards of the state should be allowed to smoke if their parents or guardians approve. Oregon passed a law in 1955 allowing teen-agers to buy cigarettes with written consent but this was repeal ed in 1959. Mrs. Ralph H. Mort of Port land, representing the Protes tant Churchwomen, reminded the committee' that the law LATEST FASHION Engineer James Adams models Ihe latest fashion for space explorers at the UCLA Biotechnology Laboratory. Church Women Oppose Juveniles Buying Tobacco would not pertain only to youngsters in correctional schools, but all the slate's young people. Mrs. Mort said even a stronger law that would pro hibit young people from smok ing in or out of the home "would be worth discussing." Detlenback Concerned Rep. John R. Dellcnback (R Medford) and Rep. Edward Fadeley (D-Eugene) expressed concern over this and said there is a question as to whether the legislature could pass such a law cutting into what is supposed to be par ental supervision. Mrs. Mort, who said her group has 32 councils throughout Oregon, suggested that what is needed in tho Institutions is an "educational program" to make youngster more aware of "ill effects" of smoking. She said if there was a choice, she would rather sea the bill allow youngsters in institutions to smoke than open up purchase of cigar ettes to all young people. ; UNIQUE NAVY Chicago - The raflroad "navy" comprises nearly 2,000 units largely used in harbor and ferry operations: ANY MAIL FROM BARKER'S ?
