New. lame slie saves money, fiet Doan's Pills today I m w Allen Funt, originator of "Candid Camera" welcomes a challenge anywhere. Here he attempts to rile up a Windsor Castle guard. Phi Silvers turned up as a barber on a recent show. WHAT YOU DON'T SEE ON "CANDID CAMERA" By HERBERT KAMM On this TV show, there's many a slip 'twixt the lens and the lip The fourth floor of an inconspicuous building in Man hattan houses the headquarters of one of the world's most efficient and capricious spy networks. It has master blueprints, the latest in cameras and recording devices, and utter faith in its mission. Through the years, the ring has collected more film footage and voice recordings than the FBI. Its machinations are known to millions of television viewers as "Candid Camera," a program whose success stems from the premise that we laugh hardest when we're laughing at the habits and harm less predicaments of others. It has filmed, or is about to film: the bewilderment of a service-station attendant trying to fill the gas tank of a foreign sports car whose capacity had been increased from 11 to 40 gallons; the whining excuses that motorists give when they're flagged down for speeding; the facial contor tions of truck drivers in a roadside diner when a male cus tomer recking with cheap cologne joins them at the counter; what a garbage man tells his kids when they ask him what he does for a living. The originator of the program, Allen Funt, delights in Family Weekly, February 19, 1961 sticking his neck out when a ruse is set up and the cameras start to grind. He once deliberately set out to get former heavyweight champion Joe Louis to take a poke at him. Funt presumably was taking pictures of the easygoing boxer for publicity pur poses. After prodding Louis several times to "look tough," Funt resorted to a stream of insults, the last of which went something like: "Aw, c'mon, Joe, you don't look like a fighter you look like a sissy." The worst that master-needier Funt got out of Louis was a growled order to "get this character out of here." Women, Funt has found, flare up much more quickly than men. Posing as a clerk in a shoe store, he took off the shoe of a hefty woman customer and went into a back room as if to check for the style and size she had requested. He returned with word that he could fit her only with a pair of white sneakers. He also returned without her shoe. A "search" of the premises failed to turn it up. Finally, Funt demanded: "Lady, are you absolutely sure you came in wearing two shoes?"
