Mr. Kroogor, Ashland BPOE member lor many years, has held the ?os'. of vice-chairman of the veterans hospital com mittee of the Oregon Slate Elks association for seven yoars. DO Exalted Ruler Sidney Ainsworlh of Ashland Elks lodge and Mrs. Ainsworth were honored during the annual Sweet hearts ball of the lodge, held February 11, at the lodge hall in Ashland. Ashland Couple Honored As Lodge 'Sweethearts' Ashland - A capacity crowd filled the Elks lounge and din ing room last Saturday night to do honor to lr. and Mrs. Emil Kroegor, "Sweethearts of 18(11" of the Ashland Elks lodge. Identity of the couple was not disclosed until officers and their wives were lined up for introduction by Philip Stansbury, Master of Cere monies of the annual event. Emil Kroeger, . longtime member' of Ashland Elks lodge, has been active for many years in veterans hos pital work. He is presently vice-chairman of the Veterans Hospital committee for the Oregon State Elks association, a post he has held for seven years. His wife Ann has served in a voluntary capacity with him. The Kroegcrs are also active in the American Legion post and auxiliary of Ashland and the Department of Oregon, having held num erous executive positions. The Valentine celebration has become an annual tradi tion of the lodge and is a so cial highlight of the winter season. The Kroegcrs arc the sixth couple to have won the Chapter To Hear Professor Talk Dr. A. S. Taylor of South ern Oregon college will speak on the Pacific northwest at a meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution Saturday, February 25. A covered dish luncheon will be served. Mrs. D. 0 Hood will be hostess, assisted by Mrs. Judd Greenman, Mrs. R. G. Beach and Miss Anne Dctweller. Women attending may call Mrs. G. O. Taylor or Mrs. Edward C. Root for menu in formation. Each is to bring table service. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the Girls Community club. Talent Women Announce Tea Talent-A silver tea and spe cial program arc planned by members of the Talent Fed erated Woman's club of the Oregon Federation of Wom en's Clubs for their meeting at 2 p.m. February 21 in Tal ent city hall. All women in the community are invited. The club met February 14 for a work day at the home of Mrs. George Brent, Valley View road. Bandages for can cer patlenis were folded dur ing the day. Edwin Dunn were chosen, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Baughman, and in 11)60 by Mr. and Mrs. Har old Merrill. Also honored at the Satur day night dinner dance wore Exalted Ruler Sidney Ains worth and Mrs. Ainsworth. After introducing the 1D61 Sweethearts, Past Exalted Ruler Stansbury presented an arm bouciuet of red roses to Mrs. Kroeger, and one of red carnations to Mrs. Ainsworth. Dancing to the music of the Evans band continued until a late hour. Others elected were Ralph Humphrey, vice - president; Mrs. Joada Leonard, record ing secretary; Mrs. Marjorie Votaw. Medford, treasurer; Mrs. Helen Barrow, corre sponding secretary. About 60 teachers attended. Mrs. Betty vonder Hellen reported on an address given by Dr. Laurene Ort, faculty member of Bowling Green university, Ohio, during a regional Oregon Education as sociation meeting held recent ly in Ashland. Dr. Ort spoke on "Creativity." She likened teaching to bread making and compared the various ingre dients and steps in making the dough and loaf to teach ing processes and policies, Mrs. vonder Hellen reported. Teachers were urged to write to their legislators, giv ing their ideas and opinions on education. William Brewster, Central Point, reported on a state De partment of Classroom Teach ers conference held in Eu gene, saying that a construc tive curriculum had been dis cussed. Mr. Brewster stated that report cards for students should measure progress, rather than just give grades, and added that "students are becoming less and less edu cated about more and more things." Glen Foster of the Eagle Point school speech de partment gave two readings. The room and tables were decorated in the valentine theme by children of the third grade in the Eagle Point school. The next meeting of the group will be April 17 at the Ruch school. This will be the final meeting of the school year, and installation of of ficers will be held. Williams Club Holds Dinner " Provolt - Williams Friend ship Garden club held its an nual Sweetheart dinner, Sat urday, February 11, at the Williams school. Forty -nine members and guests attended the event in the valentine dec orated lunch room. Entertain ment was held in the gym nasium. Miss Christine Beard sang a solo and Miss Sharon Thom as, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Thomas, played the accordion. A duct by Mrs. Herbert Beard and her daugh ter was joined by the group in "Let Me Call You Sweet heart". A color film, "Euro pean Gardens," furnished by Ray Davis Rogue Farm Sup ply was shown. Persons appointed by the club chairman, Mrs. Harriett Claypool, for the evening were Mrs. Elizabeth Beard, program; Mrs. Peg Neuber, dinner, and Mrs. Dorothy Rip pec, decorations. Guests included, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davis, Grants Pass; Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Anderson; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brlttsan, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rippee, Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Herb of the month, rose mary (rosmarinus officinalis) Past Noble Grands Holds Initiation Members of the Past Noble Grand's club of Olive Rebek ah lodge met at Girls Com munity club the evening of February 9. Visitors were Mrs. Helen Lamb, Medford, and Mrs. Alice Beechler, Kcmmercr, Wyo. A past noble grand, Mrs. Esther Coleman, was initiated and the club presented a pin to her as a new member. Past presidents night will be observed at the next meet ing. March 9. Weiss, naturo pathic physician, was guest speaker at the January meet ing. He brought specimens of bark, seeds, flowers and roots of various herbs used for cen turies in the art of healing. He said there are approxi mately 4600 known herbs with therapeutic value. Thirteen members answered roll call by telling the use of a medicinal herb. Visitors were Mrs. Dayton DePue and Mrs. H. W. Ward of Medford, Mrs. C. L. Hockersmith of Phoenix, and Mrs. Donna Ash pole of Eagle Point. Mrs. John H. Holtz gave -a study of the herb of the month, the Christmas rose (helleborus niger). Medford mem bers on the tour were Mrs. Program on Birds Given for Group Shady Cove-Mrs. Ted Con way spoke on local and migra tory birds at the February 13 meeting of the Shady Cove Garden club at the. home of Mrs. Max Hawks, River road, Shady Cove. Mrs. Conway, who has been a birdwatcher in thve area for several years, showed slides for bird identification during her talk. Roll call was answered by giving tips on wild bird feed ing. The March 13 meeting will be hold at the home of Mrs. Frank Flink on Old Ferry road, Shady Cove. The pro gram will be on gophers, moles and rodents. As a project this year, the Shady Cove grade school has entered the essay and poster contest for local, district and state sponsored by the Oregon Federation of Garden clubs.
