CE'TO FOBTM mm MB w 11 in i ART FORGERS This lioad o a holmetod warrior is one of three "Etruscan" terra cotta statues which the Metropolitan Museum of Art at New York declared to be forgeries. The three statues, heretofore considered so impressive that almost an entire room was given over to them, have been on display at the museum since 1033. The forgeries were confirmed as a result of investigations by Joseph V. Noble, operating administrator of the museum and an export on ceramics. He proved that the black glaze on the statues was not produced by an ancient oxidizing process, but by the modern dyeing agent, manganese dioxide. They were Jeff Hiatt, Milton, Poppa, Gary Stoltonburg, Gregory Becken and Jimmy Vroman, The blue ribbon winners wore JofI Hlalt, Milton Poppa and Gary Stoltenburg, who will have their work entered In the national competition at the Chrysler Salon In New York City the first week In May. Miss Catherine Fonkcn, art Instructor, will accompany her students to Portland this week end whore they will receive their awards at 2 p.m. Saturday at J. K. Gill com pany. ( Fifty-six typing students were recommended for second year typing at Mcdford High school recently by Carl Berg man, typing teacher. Because of limited enrollment, only those students who showed capabilities for doing more advanced work were recom mended, The majority of those se lected had attained a mini mum speed of 40 words per minute on a five-minute test and had at least a B average in daily typing work. During the first two weeks In February, the debate squad competed In an Inter-squad tournament, as a final prep aration for the Llnfiold Tournament of Champions. Other squad members and the speech class acted as judges. The debate contest ended In a two-way tie with two Icams undefeated in three rounds. The team of Beverly Bush and Patricia Selby thus share the Hedrick champion ship with Steve Blackhurst 'and Angus Duncan. Sandra Joyce and Sandra Irving placed second with one defeat. Mary Beth Lockington and Sally Wakefield were elected from six candidates to repre sent Hedrick in the FHA con vention at Corvallis. They will attend the meeting March 3, 4, and 5, and will stay at Oregon State university. With hopes of matching last year's records, 18 speakers from Jerome McDougall's speech classes left Wednesday to visit Linfield college for the annual speech tourna mcnt. Speakers from through, out Oregon will compete. Mcdford speech students will be transported to Lin. field by Greyhound bus and The ninth grade Hornets beat the McLoughlin Bulldogs for the second time this year. The Friday margin was 48-40 Barny Riggs' team has never lost to Mac on McLoughlin's court. The half time score was 28-10 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Klamath Falls wres tling team beat the Hedrick freshmen 34-25 recently at Hedrick Junior High. Final orders for the Hed rick Hornot were taken Mon day. More than 800 students have purchased this pictorial account of the school which will be published In May. "World Explorers" Hed rick's new geography club held a special meeting Thurs day to view a film on the Soviet Union. John McKin ney, Russian instructor from the high school, showed mag azines and newspapers in Russian, also explained some thing about tho language with the special tapes from the language laboratory. All members of the Honor Society were lo have paid their dues by Friday to Angus Duncnn, treasurer. Hall display cases have a special showing of burlap paintings from tho are classes. The library has a doll dis play in the inside showcase and in the hall, a collection of model cars. An interesting Item appear ed in the lost and found bul letin this week: Lost-a book on Frucdian Psychology. Seventh grade pupils are signing up for the babysitting course which will be given Wednesdays from 3:20 until 4 p.m. for a period of five weeks. The first class was held Wednesday. Three from Area To Attend Short Course Three area men plan lo at tend a sewage short course at Oregon State college next week. They are T. M. (Ted) Ge- row, district sanitary engi neer, Oregon state sanitary authority: Ray Fish, operator of the Medford sewage plant; and Al Alsing, operator of the Ashland sewage plant. Gcrow will lecture on sludge digestion. The course Is sponsored jointly by Oregon State col lege, the state board of health, and the state sanitary-author ity. She says that a brief exposure to an actress makes anyone believe she is putting on, or playing the part. She cites her own case. Recently she was seriously ill, and alter seeing her doctors, they suggested she see a psychiatrist, so she did. All of a sudden doctors discovered she was suffering from undulent fever, had been for nine months, but up to now they thought she was playing the part. (UPI Telephoto) Doctors Claimed Among Worst Offenders at Believing Actresses Hollvwood - tUPD - Nobody believes an actress, even when she's telling the truth. And It figures. A brief ex posure to the breed convinces iust about anyone that they usually are "on" playing a part t- exercising ineir per forming muscles. If a normal porson (and even actresses won't admit they're normal) goofs, the problem is resolved as quick ly and quietly as possible. But to an actress the smallest sit nations become full-scale pro ductions. Most of the time these out bursts are humorous and, at worst, annoying to third parties. But the glamour girls take them all seriously. And indeed they should - in some cases. Joan Seriously III Take the plight of Joan Fontaine who was seriously ill. But friends and the medi cal profession thought she was playing "Camille." It couia have been the death of her. When it comes to disbe lieving actresses the worst of fenders are doctors,' Joan said. "When you complain about being sick the doctor asks, 'Whatsa matter, Isn't your career going well, are you getting bored at home'' They think were too frivolous to have anything really wrong with us. "They figure our problems are psychosomatic and that we are merely giving another performance or feeling sorry for ourselves." In December 1957, Joan became ill during a visit to Switzerland. She described it as akin to suffering from the flu every three weeks. Grew Weaker, Thinner "I kept getting sicker, weak er and thinner every month," the titlan-haired beauty said. "Back in the states the doc tors suggested I visit a psy chiatrist. So In August of 1058 I began going through analy sis, although I knew that wasn't the basis of my trouble "One day my doctor came running into the psychiatrist's office and said, 'I found out what's wrong, You've got mononuocleosis'." Joan then spent some time in a cottage on the shores of Lake Arrow head, following a day In the hospital. Later it was discov ered she was suffering with a fever complicated by hepa titis. She was unable to work for nine months. Now that Joan's back in form she is starring for 20th Century-Fox in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." But she still is unsettled about the plight of actresses. Phoenix Man Being . Held on Check Charge Ernest William Smill, Phoe nix, is being held in the coun ty jail on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses, state police have reported. Small was arrested this week on a warrant from dis trict court. He is charged with giving a bad check to a tavern in Phoenix. .
