Southern Oregon's basket ball crew , on Friday night ended a seven -game winlcss skein by rallying to a 72 to 44 triumph over Oregon col lege. Saturday afternoon, the Wolves of OCE turned the tables. They bounced the Red Raiders of Southern Oregon 84 to 62. This victory was the first for the Wolves after 10 straight defeats. Second half action told the story. In each case, the victor took advantage of the adver saries scoring drouth to gain command. The Wolves led 27 to 25 at halftime Friday. Ted Schopf reportedly admin istered a tongue lashing to the Raiders during intermission. They responded to romp away lrom OCE. Yesterday, Oregon college had a 30 to 28 halftime gap. Whatever Schopf had to say in the dressing room during the rest was to no avail. The Wolves blazed away, while the Raiders turned cold, and out distanced the Southern Ore gon men. Furious Fast Break There were around 11 min utes to go before SOC got its first goal of the second half Saturday. The Raiders picked up four free shots while mis firing from the field. Mean while, OCE moved to a 47 to 32 margin. Oregon College cagers rip ped the Southern Oregon zone with a furious fast break and got close in shots as the Raid ers wilted. The Wolves swish ed at a .516 clip from the field and the Raiders cashed in at a rate of just .317. Leading the OCE parade were John Rankin with 23 points and Dennis Spencer with 25. Gordon Carrlgan, who made 12 of the last 14 SOC points, had 21 for the af ternoon. He also had 10 re bounds as did Tony Wolf and Bill Habel of the Wolves. For an eight-minute period in the second half Friday night, OCE went without a point. SOC during this time ran up 18 to boost a 39 to 36 difference to 57 to 38. When Spencer finally broke the Wolves' cold spell, loss than five minutes remained to Dlav. Off and Running The Raiders lit out from the second half tlnoff. Jerrv Shults pulled the Ashland school even at 27-aIl. Carri- gan's tip shot put SOC ahead for good. Then, Bob Jensen, sophomore from Mapleton, making .his first varsity start, hit a driver for 31 to 27. SOC was off and running. Jonn Payne, who led the Ashland school with 21 points ana vi rebounds, headed the second half drive with 14 of his points and his backboard play. Carrlgan had a 13 point total and the spirited Jensen cleared the boards 10 times, Toby Wolf's nine points were tops for OCE and Bob Colburn had 11 rebounds. Southern Oregon displayed a good zone defense during the evening. In the first half the Wolves were able lo hit over it. Over the last 20 min utes many of their shots were forced and missed. The Raiders fired at a .424 field clip on Friday while OCE managed just .232. Improved Idaho Vandals Snap Ducks' Eugene-WPD - The Orcaon Ducks had their winning streak snapped at seven Fri day night. The Ducks fell before Ida ho's improved Vandals 61-57. Despite the loss, they kept the lead in the Northwest college basketball indpendent's race for an nt-largc NCAA Far West playoff spot. Oregon stnnds 12-6. Both Seattle and Oregon State arc 12-7. Idaho won in the final four minutes after Oregon over came a 13-polnt deficit in the early minutes of the first half and went ahead by as much as 10 in the second half. While second round leader Henry Williams skyed to a six- over par 76 to fall off the pace, Palmer grabbed a two stroke lead from defending champ Jack- Fleck, Los An geles, who posted a 67 for a 202. Williams had to sink a 25 foot putt on the last hole for a 76 and a 207 seven strokes off the pace. He already SF Receivers Ink Contracts San Francisco - (UPD - Bob Schmidt and Hobie Landrith, the long and short of the San Francisco Giants catching staff, came to terms with the club Saturday for the 1961 season. ' ; The burly Schmidt, who stands six-feet-two, batted .267 last season after a poor year In 1959. Manager Alvin Dark has said that he will be the club's number one receiver. Chunky Landrith, five-feet- cight, was a .242 hitter last season and gave way to Schmidt in the regular lineup after taking the job away from him during the 1959 campaign. No announcement was made on whether the players took a raise or a cut but their con tracts were believed to have been -approximately last sea son's. A total of 27 Giants now are signed. KF Grapplers Down Hedrick Klamath Falls defeated Hed rick Junior high ninth grade 31 to 15 Friday in a grappling match here. Klamath won eight bouts and Hedrick three.. Wold, a starter last year who has been sitting on the bench most of this season, hit the charity toss with 11 sec onds to go to run the score to 53-50. Led By Seven ' Neil Dirom of the Cougars hit a field goal with one sec ond left. The win moved OTI lo with in one-half game of Eastern Oregon in conference stand ings. Eastern Oregon is a 8-3 and OTI 8-4. In other conference action Friday night Southern Ore gon ran away in the second half to down Oregon College of Education 72-44. Bob Peterson and Sam Smith tallied 23 and 22 points repectively to lead OTI to its convincing victory. Hewlett Nash, Leon Wilson and Gene Branson added to the Owl point parade with 15, 14 and 12 points. Tom Noel scored 20 points for the losers. Bellino Given Grid Awards Annapolis, Md.- (UPD -Navy halfback Joe Bellino received a helmetful of honors from United Press International Thursday night and had the pleasure of accepting them from an old boss. Vice Admiral William R. Smedberg, who was Academy superintedent when Bellino was a plebe and who is now chief of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, presented the awards to Bellino for UPI at the annual Annapolis Touch down club dinner. The awards certified Belli no UPI AU-American back, UPI Player of the Year and UPI Back of the Year. Bellino also received the Annapolis Touchdown club's Silver Helmet award and was commissioned an "Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay" by Gov. J. Millard Tawes. RVCC Lists 1961 Links Activities A pro-amateur spring tour ney, the Southern Oregon Jun ior tourney and the Southern Oregon Golf championships are the principal links events slated this year at Rogue Val ley Country club according to the schedule listed in the club's February bulletin. . The tour of Oregon pros to southern Oregon will see play at RVCC on March 27 and 28 after March 26 rivalry at Roseburg. Junior tourney ac tion is set for July 17 and 18 and the 33rd annual Southern Oregon championships will run from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4. Spring Handicap Next The holiday handicap at the local links will end on March 1. Spring handicap play runs Feb. 25 through May 7 and the men's two-ball partner ship event from May 6 through June 11.
