Durno said he has urged the new Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman, to have the forest service reduce its appraised pi-ices for timber sales in Oregon. The forest service is a part of Freeman's department. Durno argued that timber executives in the Northwest feel they are presently caught between ihe falling prices on the current market for lumber and the static prices set by the forest service as a minimum for selling timber from the national forests. Unemployment is increas ing in the logging industry, Durno noted, and a reduction in timber sale prices might serve to stimulate buying and Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent Washington-The small busi ness administration has de layed indefinitely the imple mentation of its new regula tion providing timber sales to small timber operators. Reps. Edwin R. Durno R Ore.) and Jack Westland (R Wash.) both urged SBA to hold hearings on the new pro posal. The proposal, as announced Dec. 29, was that timber set aside for sale to small timber in turn, to other small busi ness. That Is, if a small logger bids successfully on timber set aside by the forest service or the bureau of land manage ment for small operators only, the logger cannot then sell the togs to a large lumber com pany. He would be required to sell them to a small lumber company.
