Van-t; By Jimmy Hatlo Advertising Goal For Club Capers Hits 40 Per Cent Medord Kiwanis club mem bers have attained 40 per cent o their goal advertising tor the program of the annual Kiwanis Kapcrs, committee men reported last week. Dentists, who also con tribute their time to the club- sponsored dental clinic during the school year, were 100 per cent suoscribed for the pro gram. Of the S6.000 advertis ing goal, $2,700 has been paid or pledged. Deadline for the advertising campaign is Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Kapers production, "Off the Hook," will be pre sented on March 8, 9, 10 and 11 at the senior high school auditorium. It is the major fund raising project for the Kiwanis club's charitable project- mhse include the dental clinic for underprivileged children, the Easter egg hunt, the Christmas party at the county farm home and con tributions to the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army and the YMCA. In addi tion, various pieces of equip ment have been purchased with money raised by the Kapers, such as the audio amplifying unit used for teaching children who are hard of hearing. Valued at $65,000 Since the dental clinic was first put into operation in the court house in 1958, the clinic has furnished services to un derprivileged children which, if they had been charged at the normal rates for welfare work, would have totaled over $65,000. Medford dentists contribute their time and have performed a wide varie ty of dental services, includ ing 6,608 fillings, 1,911 ex tractions, 12 full dentures, eight partial dentures, 21 crowns and numerous special treatments and X-rays. The first Kapers, presented in 1948 as a joint effort of the Medford and Ashland clubs, netted the local club $534. This net has increased eacli year. Talent for the Kapcrs is drawn almost exclusively from members of the Medford Kiwanis club and their wives. derpool 331.2(1, L. Varner .330.71, C. VcMteeen 323.87. D. Walden 2!lii.40. W. Itv niiilnleht April 1? some 60 million Aiuerlrans mtisl have their federal liu-tune tax re turns in the mail. Hut, esit'i'iallv (or (hose due refunds, there's ho loinr in waitini; until deadline. Knowing the haste ineoine tax rules and the legal gimmicks ean save you money. You're entitled to it a'.ul the government wants you to have it. Following is the first of j five dispatehes on how- to pay , ant! not uvi'ritay your taxes They were written tor tile non expert with tei-lmli-nl details eherK ed for aeruraey by the Internal Kevenue Service. By EDWARD COWAN Washington -IllPI!- We wish we could start off this 1961 UP1 tax series with a dash ot good news - like a tax cut for everyone or deductions for poker losses. Alas, the government is still i pretty stodgy about these matters, All it's done since last year is to plug a few loop-1 holes here and open a few 1 there. Maybe the nicest develop ment all year was a law by Congress which allows bigger medical expense deductions for taxpayers who have de- I pendent parents fio and older. ! They no longer must exclude I medical expenses equal to 3 1 per cent of their income. (If I this is of interest to you be ! sure to see the fourth dis-1 patch in this series for more details.) Other Minor Changes There are other changes in ; the rules but they are pretty j minor, The scries will men-1 tion some of them as it goes j along. If you think you've heard about one that pertains to you and you're not sure about it, you should consult your Internal Revenue Serv ice office by phone or your lawyer, accountant or tax specialist. All this means that the 60 million taxpayers who must file returns by April 17 will be following pretty much the same rules as in the past few years. April 17? Not April 15? April 17 it is. That's a tem porary change this year. The usual April 15 deadline falls on a Saturday in 1961. So tax payers have two days' grace, until Monday, April 17. Who must file a return? Any citizen or resident of the United States: -Under 65 who earned $600 or more in 1960. -65 or over who earned $1,200 or more in 1960. -Who expects a refund for taxes withheld regardless of the amount of income earned. This would apply, for ex ample, to a student who earned less than $600 during the summer. It also would apply to a taxpayer who can gel a re fund because he had very large deductible expenses, such as big medical bills or in terest payments on a mort gage. One of Three Forms Regardless of the reason you are entitled lo a refund, says the Internal Revenue Service, you will get it faster the sooner you file, your re turn. To file, you complete and mail one of three return forms - and enclose a check if you owe Uncle Sam money. The forms are: 1040A, the short form. 1040W, the middle form. 1040, the long form. Roughly one taxpayer in two is eligible to use the short form, a punch card about the size of a check. 11 is for persons whose gross income in 1960 was less than $10,000, "including not more than $200 from dividends, in terest or other income on which lax was not withheld by an employer. These same income limits apply tor a joint husband-and-wife return. If the couple's combined income exceeds $200, the couple may not use Form 1040A. If you flic on the short form, and your income was under $5,000, you can let the Revenue Service compute your tax. Thus, even though your scratch paper calcula tions show that you owe money, you may omit line 10, County 4-H Leaders Elected to Offices Two Jackson county 4-11 leaders were elected officers of the State 4-H Leaders as sociation at a two-day confer ence in Corvallis last week.
