oo 0 Q o O MEDFORD Tribune Births, Deaths Show increase In CouHfy During Past Yea P SECTION B MEDFORD, OREGON, MONDAY, JANUARY 30, 1961 PAGES 1 to 8 Loan Association Notes Increase in Loans During '60 Assets of the Jackson Coun ty Federal Savings and Loan association increased by $1, 538,211 during 1960, and total savings increased by $1,579, 104 during the same period, according to W. J. Warner, association president. The reserves of the associa tion on Dec. 31 were 10.29 per cent of the total savings, according to Warner. In addi tion, the firm paid out $592,- 619 in dividends to its inves tors. Warner said that although there was a general decline in the demand for good loans during the year, mortgage loans totaled $3,048,590 at the year's end, or $794,276 more than the previous y e a r's figure. At the association's annual meeting, Rollin D. Watson was elected assistant secre eary. Watson joined the staff at Jackson County Federal in 1959, and has been in charge of the loan department since that time. Warner and John P. Moffat were reelected to the board of directors. Other reelected officers are Warner, president; H. J. Field, first vice president; Glen O. Taylor, second vice president and attorney; Pletsch, secretary - treasurer; Paul G. Antony, assistant sec retary; Irene J. Childs, assist ant secretary; and James Fredericks, assistant treasurer. t n - i ill i'l ft V Library Club To Send Alba Books Two packages of books will be sent by CARE to schools with junior high age studen in Alba, Italy, Medford's sis ter city, for the McLoughlin Junior High school Library club. Members of (lie club, during the recent Book Week, collect ed money from home rooms for CARE book packages for children overseas. The room contributing the most money decided where the books should be sent. CARE will send the books to Nicola Enrichens, educa tion director for Alba, and the secretary of the McLough lin Library club will write a letter to him telling of the project and the books to be sent. Prior to requesting the books be sent to Alba, the club corresponded with CARE officials in New York to de termine if it was possible to have books sent to Alba. The McLoughlin Library club is made of 25 students from the seventh, eighth and ninth grades who wojk as li brary assistants, checking out books, slipping books, shelv ing books, reading shelves, processing new books, and do ing other work necessary in the library. Officers for the first semes ter are Cynthia Taylor, pres ident; Ruth Peters, vice presi dent; Ron Smitlv secretary; Mary Bannister, treasurer; and Corla Earl, reporter. Deaths by age Planners Schedule Hearing on Request Medford's city planning commission Thursday night called for a public hearing on a request to rezone approxi mately 11 acres of land east of the Medford Shopping cen ter. The hearing is set for Feb. 9. Mark A. Goldy, real estate broker and financier, told the commission that he would like the property rezoned from single-family to multiple- fam ily. Goldy said the land fronts on the shopping center, Cra ter Lake ave., and south of Stevens st. It was indicated that an apartment type de velopment might be erected there. in 1959. Fewest deaths were recorded in the one to four age group, two in 1960. compared to five in 1959. Deaths in the one to nine age groups dropped 50 per cent during the last year. The number of deaths occur ring under one year of age was 35 in I960 and 39 in 1959. The one to four ace group had four deaths in 1960 and eight in 1959. "There was one maternal death in Jackson county this past year. However, due to the fact that she was in this county only 24 hours before death, and that death was at tributed to other causes, the final allocating and coding may not be charged as a ma ternal death in Jackson coun ty," Dr. Merkel said. The public health officer also noted that the deaths in infants under one month was reduced. In 1960 the rate was 19.3 per 1,000 live births, and 23.5 in 1959. Heart DeallM Most deaths recorded in the two years wete attributed directly to heart of circula tion, 430 in 1960 and 417 in 1959. Cancer and tumors ranked as the next greatest causes, S2 in mou ana oi in 1959. Accidents and violence resulted in 68 deaths in Jack son county in 1960 and 67 in 1959. Debits for December, 1960, totaled $93,850,465, $84,472, 219 for November, 1960, and $105,551,879 for December, 1959. Bank debits represent the dollar value of checks drawn against the deposit accounts of individuals and business firms. Bank debits are considered food indicators of current business activity. The value for this purpoie can be im paired if they include large checks used lo transfer funds for the purchase of certain kinds of capital assets that are not "business activity."
