Allan A. - She purposely antagonizes me, just to get me mad. Juliet A. - All during my childhood I recall my mother whispering, "Don't upset your father. You know his terrible temper." So I walked around on tiptoe, trying to stroke Dad the right way. Now I find I'm up against the same thing in my mar riage. Allan managed to con ceal his low boiling point dur ing our seven-month engage ment. I thought at last I'd be able to relax and even shoot off a little of my own steam. Instead, I still must pussyfoot and pamper "the man of the house." I can understand a man blowing up for a good reason. But Allan is unpredictable. One day he'll fly off the han dle about something he didn't bat an eyelash about, the day before. Even if I try, I can't avoid the fireworks. Allan should take himself in hand, or get help imme diately. I'm still able to love him because he gets over his fits quickly and is sweet most of the lime. But I can't count on this to continue. Allan A. - Juliet exagger ates. In some subtle way she's probably trying to reform me, to make up for the fact that she had to grin and bear it with her father and couldn't reform him. There are only a few things that make me sec red. Juliet knows what they are but, in stead of avoiding them she seems purposely to wave them in my face and await the in evitable reaction. I like order and neatness. So, it must be spitcfulncss that makes Juliet leave toothpaste tubes uncapped, and keep tea in the coffee canister. Why can't she take a knife and cut off a slice of bread, instead of tearing a loaf into hunks' We have plenty of ashtrays, but she throws her butts into the dish-water to douse them. I know 1 gel mad easily. But Juliet must change her self before she can change me. The way she acts, I'll only get madder! : The Council: "Getting mad is going mad," warned an early writer as he emerged from mental illness. He re ferred, of course, to the sclf centercd, self -pitying anger sweet juice. to Serve You that leads to destructive tan trums rather than construc tive action. Allan's future health may well depend upon his ability to understand, channel, and check the erup tions (still minor) of his wrath. But, as he suggests, Juliet may be wilfully pouring oil on smouldering bonfires to see the sparks fly. This is something she couldn't do as a child, against "the man of the house." If, on the other hand, she worked with Allan to extinguish the known con flagrations and, perhaps with the aid of a guidance counsel or, to discover what starts new ones and how to reduce or even prevent them then she'd be enhancing the health of her husband and her marriage at the same time. Juliet's lack of sympathy reminds us of the mother, quoted by Jean Schick Gross man, the parent educator. "I get mad over something," she said of her son, "but he gets mad over nothing." While Al lan's ire is easily triggered, he won't agree that it's over nothing! Allan's a young man and can still become a "grown" man by practicing restraint. What he calls the "inevitable" reaction, needn't be. He can surprise Juliet by not scold ing her for an irritation. (Sur prise himself, .loo!) Losing one's temper is easy as falling off a log. The trick is to stay in balance, no matter the provocation. There's a job to do with Allan's emotional reins. They're steering him, instead of his steering them. A temper tantrum is a lux ury with a price-tag. Allan is paying for his self-indulgence in damage to his health and his marriage. With Juliet's cooperation, he can reverse his habit of spontaneous com bustion and learn the greater power of the infrequent "slow boil."
