Richard Groener (D-Milwaukie). He said the proposal is un fair to those in lower pay grades. He plans to introduce his own bill giving across the board hikes of $100 a month. The bill Groener opposes would allow, a private $50 a month more', captains $185 and lieutenants $110. A frequent critic of the state police in the past, Groe ner said the turnover problem in the stale police is not among the officers but in the lower echelons. Then, a few people wrote to say I didn t know my busi ness because once they fell off a ladder or fell on the ice and broke the bone, and had a lot of pain, and there was something wrong with them. Well, of course there was; I think it should have been obvious that I was not talking about people who had fallen and broken the bone. I have seen a few of them but in my column I was not discussing their problem be cause there was nothing puz zling about it-nothing worth writing about. I was writing about the puzzling cases in which there was no fall and no abnormality in the bone Brittle Bones in Young People There is a miserable heredi tary disease-fortunately rare -called brittle bones; or fragi litas osslum." I remember a girl who was constantly break ing bones. She did not have to fall down; the least strain, and a bone might break in two. Fortunately, when she grew into her teens she be came practically well. In these cases the whites of the eyes often look blue because the tissue is so thin and the called choroid, or pigmented inner layer of the eye, shows through. There can be ab normalities, also, in some oth er tissues of the body. There may be a nerve deafness. As I said, this disease is bad in childhood and tends to clear up later. We doctors do not yet know exactly why the bones break so easily. It does not help to give lime salts because these children have enough lime in their blood. Fortunately, when a bone breaks It heals well. Some times doctors try giving male and female hormones. Wafer Pollution Hearings Slated Salem - (UPD - The Senate Local Government Committee has set a public hearing for Feb. 2 at 8 a.m. on two water pollution bills expected to stir controversy. One, SB 36, was introduced for the Stale Sanitary Author ity and the other, SB 138, for the City of Portland. The State Sanitary Author ity bill would give more power to that agency and the city's bill would permit mu nicipalitics a little more leeway in coping with water pollution problems.
