Arthritis of ihs Chest Wall I see many men and women who complain of a "pain in the chest." Many think they have serious heart disease, while others fear they have s o m e t h ing very much wrong with their lungs. Mst of them admit they have h a d x- ray examina tions of their heart and lungs which showed nothing wrong. They admit, also, that they have had several sets of electrocardiograms made, none of which showed any thing peculiar. Usually, I can make the diagnosis in a few minutes: I just ask the man, Does this pnin come when you walk fast or run .up stairs?" And if ho says, "Nev er, I know it is not the pain of a bad heart. If I see the man is not short of breath, and if he says he is never short of breath, and he can lit flat at night, he is not likely to have any heart dis ease. Then, I ask if he has any cough pr sputum or wheezing, and if he says, "Never," he la not likely to have trouble with his lungs. Next, I ask if for years he has been arthrit ic, with spells of pain or sore ness in his joints, bones, mus cles or bursas, and he says, Yes. Then, all I usually have to do to clinch the diag nosis is to have him undress. I press on his ribs, his breast bone and the cartilages that join the front ends of his ribs to his breast-bone, and per- haps in several areas I find that a segment of rib or car tilage is sore to the touch. That is where his disease is, Saturday Review Sale Negotiated New York -(UPD- Arthur B.
