Newspaper Page Texto o o o o G 4 Bl Reds Have Lost 30,000 Members In India Lately J New Delhi - (UPII - Ruling Congress party leaders esti mated 30,000 Communists ' nave resigned from the Com munist party of India (CPI) k during the past 15 months. Communist leaders refuse to confirm the figure, but admit there have been some withdrawals, According to . the Reds, the defectors "never were real Communists, any way." A Communist member of parliament put It this way: "I would call them flexible 'politicians.' They are weather cocks, changing color accord ing to the season." 48 Resign The MP was commenting on well publicized reports that '48 Communists In the Punjab ' State of northern India had formally resigned from the CPI. In a statement they gave 'as their reasons the "anti-national attitude" of the Indian Communists on the Sino-In-dian border dispute and the local party's continued sub servience to Peiplng and Mos cow. ' The defectors included one -member of parliament and four members of the Punjab State Legislature. Predictably, the day following their resig nation from the CPI they join , ed Prime Minister Jawaharlal iWehru's catch - all Congress parly, noting It was "the only 'organization thai can lead India to socialism." The Communists seem pre ty much responsible for the. 'Own troubles. Their failui to take a stand within t -reasonable time on the Sino Indian border dispute hurt them badly. When the CPI finally did decide to back In dia, it was done at a noisy party conference which re pealed strong backing for China among party elders. 'No Imporianct Communist party leaders 'said they attached no impor tance to the defections. They said the party would not be : weakened., ' A Communist party spokes man said the party's solid 'membership at present is about 3 million. In West Ben gal (Calcutta) alone, he said, the party has 281,000 full-time 'workers. The spokesman said the Communist party of India is the only solid opposition to "the ruling Congress party and if ever a chance comes, it is '"we alone" who can replace It. The spokesman described the resignations as only a "temporary phase. He said that 'as soon as "conditions are , , normal" the party will regain 'its original prestige. Duchess Speaks Against British .Royal Family : New York - IUPII - The American born Duchess of :. Windsor has spoken out .against the attitude of the ' 'British royal family, the Brit ish government and many of .the British people toward her husband and disclosed that he ;has been deeply hurt by "24 .years of persecution." . In the first of a series of monthly columns in McCall's .-Magazine, the Duchess said ,ahe decided to write the col ' umn because "the money Is useful" and "at last I had a chance to tell the world what I think about the treatment of my husband." i r "It suddenly occurred to me how ridiculous it is to go on being a family-designed, government - manufnelur e d curtain of asbestos that pro tects the British Common wealth from dangerous use," 'she said. "It also occurred to me that here was a way to dispel some myths and cx- plode some canards tRiit have been circulating about us for a quarter of a century." Plays in Major -League of Bridge Austin, Tex. - (UPD - Despite being only 30 years old in the towering bridge-playing world of the Jacobys and Gorens, Curtis Smith of Austin has played with the best in fine style. As a matter of fact. Smith and Oswald Jacoby are col laborating on a book about their partner style of play that won them the National Bridge Tournament onen-Dair competition. The 30-year-old Smith ii making a living out of bridge. The operator of the Austin Bridge Studio explains that professional bridge is no wind fall directly, but brings in good money indirectly. Smith says pros don't win cash prizes for bridge victories, but do got their name and fame before the public, and as a result people go to their studio for lessons or to buy their les son plan. The young professional started playing when he wai 18 - the age when his con temporaries were learning to soup up hot rods or bang out a base hit. By the time he had gone through the University of California, studying mathe matics, Smith decided he would try bridge for a career. And about two years ago he decided to put his and Ja- coby's bidding system down in writing so others could learn. Period of Years "It's something we came to over a period of years," Smith said. "I had played with prob ably the best players in the country, and I have tried to use their ways of doing thing! in my methods." Smith, who thinks Jacoby ii as great as any bridge player, believes there's more to good bridge than sitting down with some friends and learning from the book. 'AH good players have an apparent feel for cards - they have a card sense." He says that with that card sense, a good memory, and some imagination, a person stands to get into the big leagues of bridge playing. Whether the explanation is loo long or Smith wants to keep trade secrets at horn until he can publish the book, he is not too wordy about the Jacoby-Smllh system. He say. it involves basically "very ag gressive bidding." "By the end of the second round of bidding," he said, "one or the other of the part ners will have limited the siz. of his hand, so that the hand opposite, which makes the limit bid, can determine the level at which it should be played." Smith believes the really good bridge players i(l this counlry total from 200 to 250. He thinks American players generally don't come up to the French and Italians. Men Have Edg. Although he hedges a littlt when asked whether men or women play better bridge, Smith thinks men have the edge." "A woman can't concentrate as well," Smith said. "MeYi are somewhat more aggres sive." 1 A little of his reticence to bring up the man-woman ques tion Is caused by the fact that his wife, Jerry, helps Smith run the Austin Bridge Studio. Smith says his son has been bit slow to take up the game, and is far from being a professional. The son, Da vid,, is only 3V4 years old.
