Murphy is former special counsel to President Truman. (Uf 1 reiepnoioj Ashland Prefixes To Be Reduced to One Number ' Medford residents will find Ashland telephone prefixes reduced from three to one when the new central office there Is put Into service in May, according to J. H. Crcager, locai manager for Pacific Telephone-Northwest. Letters and numbers used In "combination will be drop ped In favor of numbers only for Ashland telephones. All number calling, a na tionwide numbering plan, will give all Ashland telephones the same prefix, 482, follow ed by four more digits. For example, 482-UUlu, is ine way a phone number there will appear. Early plans contemplated the prefix HU 2 for all Ash land phones when the present MU 2, 5 and 9 prefixes were scheduled to be dropped at the time of the change in May of this year, but the all num ber calling plan has replaced the two letter -five number system. Makes ANC Nicauily Population growth and the expansion of phone service to nations around the world has made ANC a necessity if there are to be enough phone num bers to serve everyone. Besides fitting Into the fu ture, ANC has the advantages of eliminating misspelling ends the letter-number con fusion, and it makes dialing faster and more accurate man previous numbering systems, Creager said. . Since all number calling has worked out so well in communities of all sizes all over the country, Creager added, Pacific Telephone- Northwest will introduce the new system in Ashland in May and avoid a second num ber change In the future.
