Fruit Growers Pick Spatz as President Tom Spatz, manager of the Chrystal Springs orchard, was elected president of the Jack soli County Fruit Growers league at its annual meeting Friday afternoon in the Na tlonnl Guard armory south of Mcdford. , -At 28, Spatz is probably 'one of the youngest presidents .of the long established organi zation. '' Edwin Gebhard, Central Point fruit grower, was named first vice president; Bill Bag ley, Ashland cannery oper ator, was elected second vice president, and Shelby Tuttle jyrs reelected secrelary-trcas- ' urer. . : Other directors elected were Orville Hamilton, Mar- -tin- Luther Jr., and Bud Bar purh. ,i In making his president's report, Charles Henry noted .that one of the many uncer tainties facing the pear indus try is the fruit labor. This re lulled in extensive recruiting. Survey Agencies' '." Joe Wilson, of the local cm- 'pioyment service office, made 8 business trlP t0 Texas last winter and surveyed agencies there to recruit help. Federal labor officials had suggested to Mcdford area growers they start their recruiting in Febru ary, due to the light labor sup ply. In July, Shelby Tuttle, Al Gonzales and Wilson went to Dayton, Wash., during the pea harvest, and convinced 35 of 100 Mexicans from Texas to Jielp in the Mcdford pear har vest. Allen Memorial Lecturer for 1961. k Bruckcr, whose paper is the "oldest newspaper of continu ous publication in America", will speak during the 42nd annual Oregon Press confer ence al the University of Ore gon. His lecture, the feature of the two-dav conference, will be Friday, Feb. 17. A staff member of the Co lumbia university school of journal from 1932 lo 1944, Bruckcr has been associated with the Courant since thai time and has been editor since 1947. For a year during the war he was associate chief of the bureau of overseas pub lications. Office of War In formation. Company Releases Figures on Loans Real estate loans totaling $745,866 were disbursed in Medford during 1960 by the western home office of Pru dential Insurance company, according to B. F. Crisler, local investments manager for the company's mortgage loan department. Of the total, $686,487 was for residential loans and $50, 379 was for commercial and industrial properties. Total disbursals throughout the state of Oregon amounted to $14,233,527 last year. The aggregate amount disbursed by the company throughout the 13 western slates during 1960 was $183,444,758. Beef or Lamb in Savory Irish Slew Made with the thriftier meat cuts, either beef or lamb may be used in this slew with an Irish lilt. Eieht emprniK servings and it is wonderful warmed over. 2 pounds lean beef or lamb stew meal cut into 1 inch pieces 3 tablespoons flour 2 teaspoons salt 3 tablespoons shortening 10 black peppercorns 1 teaspoon bouquet garni for beef or V4 teaspoon lamb garni 1 large onion, coarsely chopped 2 large stalks celery, cut up 3 medium carrots, cut up 2 medium potatoes, cubed 3 tablespoons flour Dredge meat in flour mixed with salt to coat on all sides. Brown In hot shortening or cooking oil. Add peppercorns and beef or lamb garni along with onion, celery, carrots and potatoes. Add enough boiling water to cover vege tables. Cover pan with tight filling lid and simmer gently tor 2 to 2V4 hours or until meat is very tender. For crisper texture, add carrots and potatoes during last 30 minutes of cooking. Combine flour with a little water and stir into mixture lo thicken gravv lo desired consistency. Add additional salt if necessary. Easy Lamb Curry With Condiments Heaps of fluffy hot rice ex tend the superb flavor of this easy-to-make curry. Individual dishes offering condiments are customary. Choose five or more from the following -flaked coconut, raisins, chut ney, slivered almonds or chop ped peanuts, chopped green peppers, crisp bacon bits, finely chopped hard - cooked egg and diced green onion tops. Eight generous servings. 2 pounds lamb slew meat cut in 1-Inch pieces. 2 tablespoons shortening or cooking oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 1 s teaspoons salt Pepper 14 teaspoon bouquet garni for lamb 2 cups boiling water 2 to 3 tablespoons flour 1 to 1!4 teaspoons curry powder 2 tablespoons cold water Brown lamb on all sides in hoi shortening. Add onions and continue cooking until onions are golden. Stir in salt. pepper, bouquet garni for lamb and boiling water. Cover tightly and simmer slowly un til lamb Is tender, about two hours. Combine flour and curry powder. Add water lo form a smooth paste. Stir into lamb lo thicken gravy. Taste for seasonings and add addi tional curry powder If de sired. Serve over hot fluffy rice. Hungarian Goulash With Caraway Noodles This recipe is a modern version of famed Hungarian Goulash, made easy with bouquet garni for beef which mingles the flavors ot half a dozen herbs and spices ready tor teaspooning out. Cut fillets into serving-size portions. Add salt to milk. Dip fillets in milk and roll In crumbs: place in a well-greased baking pan. Sprinkle each piece of fish with butter. Bake in an ex tremely hot oven, 500 degrees, for 10 to 12 minutes (not an inslant longer); just until fish flakes easily when tested with fork.
