The council reports on pron lems thai have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors. (Copyright 1U61 General Features Corp.) Emil T. - His family takes advantage of my poor kid sis ter. Myles N. - I'm not going to let her come between me and my family. Emil T. - My baby sister, Amy, is only 19 but after a year and a half of marriage to Myles, she looks middle-aged already. I hadn't seen her since the baby was born, six months ago, and I was shock ed a few days ago to see the changes in her. She's haggard and jumpy. She's a chain smoker. Former ly she was blooming and good natured, just a happy-go-lucky kid. The trouble seems to be that Myles thinks more of his family than of his wife. His sister barges in on her with six small children. The young sters wreck the place and break the baby's things. An other sister drops in to get away from her children, leav ing three little ones alone. Myles doesn't see this as an imposition on Amy. Our lam ily waits to be invited. But Myles wants open house for his. Mylos N. - We married young. I'm 21 and naturally I still feel very close to my sis ters and brothers. There are seven of us and I'm the boby. I've noticed that unless a husband puts his foot down, the home Is always full of the wife's relatives. His family Is never catered to, and then get to feel they're not welcome. This is one thing I want to avoid. From the beginning of my marriage I've been urging my folks to remember that "my home is' their home" too. That's the spirit in our family. Amy knows that their homes are just as open to us. Just because I'm married is no reason for me to stop be ing a brother. I want to be part of the family circle when ever noses are counted. . The Councih Myles may be the "baby" of one family but, prematurely perhaps, he's the head of another. Evidently, he has no clear idea of how to make the leap. The lack of premarital coun seling Is clear here and la mentable indeed. During some marriage ceremonies, the an swer to which comes 'first, mate or family, is stated In simple words: "Forsaking all others, I take thee." But all marriage In our culture Im l ':. - Im , tiring president. The commissioner was Kuosl of honor and spoke at a recent dinner meeting of the Medford Realty board and the Women's council of the board held at The Dardanelles, Gold Hill i limrm 'RIDAys ANO SATURDAYS, WHEN VDU CAM DO SOME LATE VIEWING THE PICTURES ON TV ARE THE WORST- and a women's editor. Each article plies this monmentous shift in loyalties. And most marital discord springs from a wishy- washy, fuzzy-minded disre gard of the husband-wife pri macy in marriage. So Myles must get his scale of values straight, and Amy must be aided to speak up for her rights as hostess in her own home. Being wife to Myles and in-law to his family doesn't make her a yo-yo in the palm of their hand! A touch of good marriage counseling ought to suffice to get this naive pair on the right beam. With "first things first" guiding Myles, he'll defer to Amy. He 11 stop using "I" and "me" and "my" so much, and get into the "we" habit. And that "we" must mean my wife and I, not my "sisters and the cousins whom I reckon by the dozens, and my aunts!" And Amy will assert herself as a side-by-side partner of Myles who understands his love of family and will afford him opportunities to play host to his kin at reasonable inter vals. But his sisters will call per arrangement and only when enough adults are at hand to keep the kids in tow. I Myles and Amy love each other, the cruel choice of "me or your family" will never be forced. Its you and me first. Then your and my family. Plenty of room aboard, once the ship Is safely afloat. Knowland Predicts Test for Kennedy Salem -IUP1I- Former U. S. Sen. William F. Knowland predicted Thursday that with in eight months the Kremlin will "test" the new Kennedy administration in such trouble spots as Berlin, Far East, Mid dle East and the Western Hemisphere, including Cuba. He said the Communists know what the policies of the Eisenhower adminlstr a 1 1 o n have been but they will prob ably exert pressure in these areas to sec how the policies of President John F. Kennedy differ. The California Republican said he sees "no indication that the Kennedy administra tion will yield" but he warned that the next eight months will be challenging times. Knowland stopped off here after appearing at a GOP luncheon In Portland.
