The Public Library of Med ford and Jackson county has grown considerably during the past six months and much of this growth can be attributed to the efforts of one man -Head Librarian Omar Bacon. This .is according to Dr. John T. Brandenburg, a mem ber of tlie library board. Dr. Brandenburg introduced Ba con to the Medford city coun cil Thursday night as a man the library board "feels has done an outstanding job." i Since Bacon took over the library and its problems 14 months ago, the library has seen a 35 per cent increase in the number of users. In the last six months alone, book circulation at the library has increased by another 35 per cent. Use of the branch libra ries has increased by 114 per library by the county court, the Medford city council and local news media. He also not ed that two grants from the state for rural library im provement, totaling $25,000 were received during the past year. According to the report. 132,404 books were circulated from the library and its branches from July through December, 1960. This can be compared to the 97,868 books circulated during the same pe riod in 1959. Pace Rural Growth Pacing the rural library growth was the Central Point library which showed a 190 per cent increase in book cir library during the pa'jt six months include an active co operation between the library and the Ashland public li brary. It is now possible for a patron to borrow books from cither library system on his one registration card, and he can return the book to the library most convenient for him. Plans Increased Service ; Dr. Brandenburg told the city council Thursday night that the library plans in the future to increase its mailing service to senior citizens. Un der this service, a patron can write, receive and return books, all by mail. Also during the past six months, the library has in stalled a curbside book drop in front of the library and add ed a record collection. The records are loaned out on the same basis as books. The report noted that some problems have developed be cause of the unexpected growth of the library, such as the need for more personnel, but it concludes with the as surance that "the library an ticipates continued high serv ice to the public in the next six months." culation. Close behind was the Shady Cove library with" a 174 per cent increase and the Jacksonville library with a 153 per cent increase. There are nine branches in the sys tem, in addition to the central library in Medford. There were 14,870 register ed borrowers in the system in December, 1960, compared to 14,007 in July, 1960. During that six months period, 3,301 new borrowers were register ed, and 2,438 were dropped. Of the 14,870 registered bor rowers, 5,296 of them were children. Other improvements at the cent. " .' " Air of Friendliness Before Bacon came, accord ing to Dr. Brandenburg, the library "was a hostile place to get a book." Now, there is an air of friendliness about the place; employee morale has improved; and many "un just" rules and regulations are gone. In a six-months report pre pared for the council, Bacon himself attributes the growth to increasing support of the FELLOWSHIP MEETING Cave Junction - The Fel lowship of Southern Oregon and Northern California Com munity churches was held eariier this month at the Com munity church, Cave Junction. Among the ministers present was the Rev. Garland R. Shinn, Gold Hill, representa tive of the American Sunday School union. 'Ml! Ml' ' ! i 1 :i 1 1 i f i I I i f "; j 1 50 pc.
