We doctors s u s- pect that such hiccuping i s due to a virus which has at tacked the nu cleus of. one of the phrenic Alvarez nerves which runs down from the side of the neck to control one-half of the diaphragm or midriff. Because I no longer see acute cases, it is years since I have seen a person with a 10-day hiccup but I used gen. erally to stop the torture, and fjve relief to these people imply by giving a good-sized dose of a strong sleeping med icine, such as nembutal. Us- ually, the patient slept 10 hours, and when he woke, his hiccup was gone. When chil dren get to hiccuping, perhaps after laughing too much, the simplest way of stopping the spasms of the midriff muscle is to have the child sip some water. Once when I was a boy and I could not stop my hiccups, our old Scottish nurse started telling me that she had caught me in some devilment, and was going to toll my mother when she came home. I kept puzzling, trying to figure out what particular bit of mis chief she had gotten onto Then she laughed and said, FRIDAY 8:00 Kennedy Inauguration 11 :00 Morning Court 11:30 Love That Bob 12:00 The Cnmoullnge 12 :30 As The World Turns 1:00 About Faces 1 :30 House Party 2:00 Day In Court 2:30 Road To Reality 3:00 Brighter Dhj 3:15 Secret Storrn 3:30 Edge ot Night 4:00 American Bandstand 5:00 Ore-Cal Panorama 5:30 Huckleberry Hound " 6:00 Six O'clock Report 6:10 TV Weatherman 6:15 Doug Edwards & News 6:30 Sportsmen 8:45 TV Question Box ,J 7 :00 Sea Hunt x 7:30 Ann Sothcrn 8:00 Angel 8:30 Fllntstones 8:00 77 Sunset Slrln 10:00 The Detectives 10:30 Law & Mr. Jones 11:00 TB A 11:15 Preside- :ural Ball : 3 MA INAUGURATION DAY! Diabetes on Both Sides Of th Family a lni nf rjeoDle have been writing to say something like thi. "Mu rfauemer. since me age of 15, has had severe diabetes. Now she wants to marry. What chance has she nt haulno nnrmnl children?" She has a chance of having normal children, but h sne is to avoid a still-born child, then-especially during the lat ter months of each pregnancy -she must be watched at fre quent intervals by a man who is highly skilled in the field of diabetes. The next question the moth er asks me is a serious one. She says she is much worried because her daughter is plan ning to marry a man who has riinhntirs amnnp. his close re lations, and she wonders if this will greatly increase the chances of some of the cou ple's children being diabetic. She is right. A good thing to do would be to have the young man's hlnnn1 tostprl in several ways to see if he is a carrier of a tendency to diabetes. If he is, and he and his wifp shnnlH have four chil dren, perhaps three could be either diabetics or carriers ot diabetes. If every test .sug gests that the man is free from a tendency to diabetes, then perhaps only half of the children will have a- tendency tn tfof thu tnnihr.rs' riispnKp. Nowadays, the Government and big Foundations are giv ing huee sums for research to cut down the mounting in cidence of mental diseases, diabetes, epilepsy, and other troubles that run throuen families. What distresses and sometimes angers me is that later when the reports come in, there is not a word about heredity or about any need lor telling young people, con Ipmnlatintf marriage, that if they both are carriers of a hereditary disease, they are likely to have nothing but great sorrow out of their chil dren.
