McKinley. Twenty two other persons earned bronze medals for heroism, including three from California, one from Oregon and one from British Colum bia. . 81 Persons Reply To Invitation for OregonBankParfy Eighty -one 73 -year-olds have responded to an invita tion from the Rogue Valley State bank to attend tonight's special celebration of the mer ger of the Rogue valley finan cial institution with The Ore gon Bank. Persons born in 18B7 are being honored at the party since that was the same year in which the forerunner1 of The Oregon Bank was found ed. The bank now has the' old est trust department west of the Rocky mountains. The merger celebration will be held in the Pioneer room at the Jackson hotel. Each 73 year-old guest will receive a boutonniere or corsage, and will be called on to say a few words about where he was born and where he lived., Dr. Taylor To Speak Also at tonight's celebra tion, Dr. Arthur Taylor, pro fessor of history at Southern Oregon college, will deliver a talk on early banking in Ore gon. He will give special at tention to the role played by the Eagle Point State bank in the development of this area. The Eagle Point bank, estab lished 50 years ago, was the forerunner of the Rogue Val ley State bank. An open house will be held at the two Mcdford branches of the Rogue Valley State bank tomorrow, with the 73-year-olds serving as hosts and hostesses. Clarence Young, president of the local bank, said the only change in the operation of the bank locally, when the merger is completed, will be the addition of The Oregon Bank's trust department. No changes in personnel or gen eral policies is anticipated. Area Teachers To Attend Institute , Portland Lynn D. Bcrnl on, a teacher at Crater High school, and Esther L. Hopper, a teacher at Eagle Point High school, are two of 25 candi dates accepted for the 1061 Guidance and Counseling Training Institute which will be held at the general ex tension division's Portland Center. Feb. 6 to May 26. Dr. Harold Bernard, direct or of the Institute, said that those trained at the institute will be on leave from their positions during the 18-weck period. He reported that carefully-selected enrollces will comr from six Western states Oregon, Washington, Cali fornia. Nevada, Idaho and New Mexico. The institute, for high school counselors and those training to be counselors, is one of several conducted around the nation under con tract with the U.S. office of education. The training ses sions are set up under pro visions of the national defense education act. The U.S. office of education has signed new cogtracts for a 1961 summer and a 1961-62 regular year counseling and guidance institute, both to be held at Portland. Applications are now being taken, Dr. Ber nard said. ine silver medal winner was Link Luckctt, 32, of An chorage. Westerners awarded the bronze medals were Gale H. Wilcox, 48, Albany, Ore Donald I. McCain, 30, Edmon ton, Alia.; James R. Rand, 16, Oakland, Calif.; Billy G Carncs, 34, San Leandro, Calif.; and Eugene V. Long, 48, Sunnyvale, Calif. Wilcox and McClain were honored posthumously. They gave their lives while carry Ing out rescue attempts. Luckett flew repeatedly to the 17,200-foot level of Mt. McKinley 1,000 feet above the maximum ceiling for his craft-to rescue Oregon ranch er John S. Day and Peter K. Schoening, of Seattle, Wash His landings were the highest accompished by any type of aircraft. Stripped Helicopter The pilot stripped his heli copter of all unnecessary equipment and., carried only mlnmum of gas to make the flights to a jagged ice plateau, where Day and Schoening were stranded, frostbitten and injured. In addition to the silver medal, Luckett received $500 cash award and $700 reimbursement for his losses In the rescue operation. Forest Ranger Wilcox drowned in a vain effort to save a fellow ranger who broke through the ice on a lake near Mornn, Wyo., last March 9. His widow received the posthumous bronze award and a $60-a-month pension from the commission. McClain steered his brake- less tractor-trailer down a winding mountain road near Field, B. C, and managed to avoid hitting 30 sightsecrers and road workers at a lookout point. He was crushed to death when the truck overturned. His widow received a medal and $1,000 In death benefits. California Rescues Rand and Carnes were hon ored for saving 15-year-old Mary Jane Santosussa when she broke through ice on a lake near Plnecrest, Calif., on Feb. 28, 1059. The girl and a teen-age boy fell through the ice into 10 feet of water, and Rand and Carncs fell through as they went to the resuce. They were able to help the girl and her companion to safety, although the ice broke beneath the group on two other occasions as they Inched their way lo shore. Long was honored for sav ing the life of Louis V. Pod- gornlk, 40, a fellow workman, who was buried in the col lapse of a mountain of salt t Redwood City on March 30. 1060. Long crawled Into a hole made In the side of the salt pile by rescuers and revived Podgornlk with mouth-to-mouth rcsplriation. He be came partially burled himself, but stayed with Podgornik ad ministering oxygen and keep ing the sliding salt from his face while rescue workers dug away enough salt to free them. Portland Man Jailed On Car Theft Charge Ashland - A Portland man being held In the Ashland city jail will be returned to . Portland to face charges of grand larceny, Ashland police have reported. William Joseph Brown. 31, of 718 North Cook St., Port land, will he returned by Portland police. Brown was arrested in Ashland Tuesday night driving a stolen car, po lice SRid. Brown was arrested by Ash land police on charges of vio lation of basic rule and no operators license.
