o o S A MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 1961 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE, Small Worlds Around Us f KlTvi llynnW. I AS Hff1) Walklnt (Helltr It Trlbunr SyndioU, 1961) 1961) Miranda always dresses In black with splashes of bright orange, and she lives in a gar den or alongside a road. .If you know her you will call her a spider; if you have ... had an introduction you will know her as the golden gar den spider, but her real name is Miranda. ; " ' She and her kind did' their bit during the last world war ' by supplying miles of silk thread; thread so fine it was the only material available for use in range finders and other optical instruments in which the circular field of vision j must be divided by i fin , line. , , Miranda belongs to the spe- . cics o spiders known as the : "orb-weavers." Her web may be two or more feet across, placed on trees or large weeds or wherever there is a reason able chance of catching in sects. The web is a complex structure of spirals and spokes geometrically perfect and con- taining two kinds of threads- some sticky, others smooth and non-adhesiye. The center of Miranda'; web is often sheeted over, or it may be composed of lrregu lar sections of silk in designs that may roughly resemble the letters of an alphabet. In the center of this silken skein sits Miranda, always with her head downward. Quick Strike The instant an insect strikes any section of the web she darts to it and rapidly throws a skein of silk around tne struggling victim. In a matter of seconds the Insect can neither move nor escape., If the spider is hungry she may consume the captive. After he has eaten what she wants, she cuts out that section of the web holding the remains of her feast and drops it to the ground; There on the ground waits the male spider. What drops is his. He has to be content with what she gives him for he is only- a fraction of her size. Should he be foolish I enough to attempt to better! ' .Vila Inwlv nnflitian. she would I kill and eat him. h Should a large and power ul insect, such as a grasshop per,' blunder, into the web, Miranda has a special way to deal with him. She jerks the web violently to and fro like a monkey yanking at the bars of its cage, in order to entan gle the hopper with sticky threads. At the fight instant she will dash in and bite the victim with , her poisonous fangs. ' ' ; Powerless Victim ' The poison renders the vic tim powerless; the spider throws a silken shroud around it, and what was a grasshop per is now a blob of motion less flesh. Whether she eats him to day or next week makes little difference, he is paralyzed; he Is not dead but Is incapable of motion. He must wait in his silken shroud for the day when he will be eaten. As the days go by other insects are entangled; each Is treated the : same until there may ba doz ens of still bodies tangled in the web. Miranda never gives up; she will take care of all who come. And, too, the web usu ally holds more than the "living dead"; it also holds the little silken sacs in which Miranda has carefully laid hundreds of liny, bead -like eggs. Here, then ,ln the spider web Is the embodiment of the skein of life-Miranda herself waiting for more victims; shrouded beings waiting to be ; eaten; eggs waiting to be hatched; and below it all, the father, an insignificant male, also waiting for food or death, whichever the lady In the ; black dress decides. Poor lit '. tie dope-he who walls; if he ever had a dream It would be a nightmare.
