The union, Industrial Local 1662, Carpenters, AFL-CIO, wants Mister Tom the cat to remain at the Los Angeles suburban firm where he has been the workers' mascot since wandering in about 1955. Management is reluctantly backing a new security officer who ordered Mister Tom to go on the ground that his housekeeping methods aren't the tidiest. "If necessary, we shall sub mit the matter to the State Conciliation Service for arbi tration," Local President Charles Powers, 38, said to day. Everybody Loves Tom "Mister Tom is a regular part of the company and he's a terrific morale builder," Powers said. "Everybody loves Tom." And Powers suggested a lit tle sandbox by the door might just settle the whole thing if the company will agree. The union took its first action Wednesday after about 300 of the firm's nearly 600 workers signed a petition call ed "Operation-Save Our Cat." Powers and George Brod- ney, personnel director of the firm, met as prescribed by the union-management work con tract to discuss the grievance Backs Security Officer Powers said Brodney felt he had to back up the new security officer, although re luctantly. Powers, following the steps for pressing a grievance, ar ranged with Brodney to call In outside help for their next meeting within 14 days. With grievance sessions still pending, Tom has been taken home by one of the guards. But the folks at his "real"' home miss him. 'We've really got to get him back," said Powers. "There's always been a cat here and it doesn't seem right without one." Two Men Appear In District Court Dean Remus Watkins, Med- ford, is scheduled to appear in district court March 1 to face trial on charges of defrauding an inn keeper.. He pleaded innocent to the charges Thursday. Watkins is charged with leaving the Res- more Motel in Talent without paying for lodging. Daniel Steven O'Quinn, alias R. G. Richardson, Boise, Idaho, was bound over to the grand jury Thursday on charges of forging a check for $156 and giving it to the Owl club in Medford on Sept. 11. Morse To Introduce Deportees' Biff Washington - (UPD - Sen. Wayne Morse, D-Ore., said Friday he would introduce two bills in Congress which if passed would permit return to the United States of de portees William A. Mackie and Hamish Scott MacKay. The two men were deported to Finland and Canada late last year after losing a long battle to stay in this country. Morse had introduced bills in the last session of Congress to permit them to stay but they were not acted upon. ... ..r I ft CAKE $149 $195 COVERS J and J Reg. 1.59 Rubbermaid DISH DRAINER O New 10 gal.
