Geese Mystery Now
Solved by Russians
Portland -0IPD- The State
Game Commission said Friday
the mystery surrounding three
Russian - banded snow geese
taken by waterfowl hunters
at Summer Lake last fall has
been solved.
Russian biologists said in a
letter to the commission they
had banded the geese in con
nection with their biological
investigations on waterfowl.
The three geese were trap
ped and banded last July 18
on Wrangel Island some 100
miles north of the Siberian
coastline in the Chuckchee
sea. To reach Summer Lake
in Oregon the geese traveled
southeast across the sea, diag
onally across the Alaskan
mainland, south across the
Yukon and Brtish Columbia
and then south through Wash
ington and Oregon - some
3,000 miles.
