The Week in California Farm Labor War Refuses to Lie Dormant During Winter Months United Preis International California's farm labor war Is refusing to lie dormant over the winter months. The battle scene now lies in the 'rich Imperial valley. where a $19 million lettuce crop is being picked. The par ticipants are members of the Agricultural Workers Organ izing committee and the Unit ed. Packinghouse Workers of America on one side, and angry farmers on the other. The smouldering unrest came to a head Friday when 83 union members walked off their jobs at the Bruce Church ranch two miles south of Brawley. While several car loads of sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol men stood by, union spokes men said they wanted a 35 cent hourly pay increase and other benefits. The field work ers minimum wage is now 90 cents an hour and they want $1.25. 'Show of Strength' Earlier in the same day, 40 growers, appeared at a labor pickup point in Calexico called "the hole" to harass the growers' hiring agents. Union spokesmen answered that domestic workers should be able to seek work from the farm owners individually in stead of having to be hired daily through the present rep- resentative setup. They charged that the Imperial Val ley Farmers association re fused to hire 97 qualified workers waiting at the labor pickup point the day before. The farmers denied the charge and countered that 40 laborers had refused to work With one strike in progress and charges becoming more angry from both sides, the sit uation promises to develop Into a fierce battle when the union attempts a general walkout next week.
