Mrs. Green Urges
OregonParticipation
Washington - IUPD - Rep.
Edith Green, D-Ore., has
urged Gov. Mark Hatfield to
take advantage of a federal
plan to provide free food to
Oregon's needy.
Oregon is one of only eight
states which do not share in
the plan for distributing sur
plus food, Mrs. Green said.
She said Oregon should ac
cept such food in light ot
growing unemployment and
increasing welfare costs. Tho
federal government provides
the food free and also pays
the cost of shipping it to the
state. The recipient state need
pay only the cost of local dis
tribution. "It seems to me inexcusable
to be paying storage costs
and having surplus foods rot
ting when there are many peo
ple who are actually hungry,"
she said.
