O ' 'u . o o o Comets Slate Tilt With Grants Pass Central Point - Means to combat Grants Pass height and to overcome its defense have occupied Crater high bas ketball attention this week. The Comets journey to Grants Pass on Friday tor Southern Oregon conference play. They go to Mcdford on Saturday to start the loops second time around. Crater and GP each have de feated Ashland and lost to Klamath Falls and Medford in league games so far. Each is ambitious to keep in the con ference race. Two Comets have been on the ailing list, Loyal Higin botham with tonsillitis and Bryson LaCasse with a kidney ailment. Both missed drills on Monday and Tuesday. Coach Lloyd Hoffine said he felt that Higinbotham would be ready for week end serv ice. LaCasse's availability was less certain. Tough Assignment A good hard struggle is an ticipated against the Cave men since both schools have aggressive teams. The GP club will have the advantage of greater size under the hoops, giving the Comets a lough assignment in the effort to get their share of the re bounds. Last week Grants Pass pretty well stopped Medford's fast break which indicates that Crater must be prepared to try to crack the Caveman de fense after it is set. Comet starters likely will be from among Jeff Anhorn, Tom White, Jim Allen, Dennis Edwards, Higinbotham and Louis Alvarez. Grants Pass could open with Jim Davis, Clyde Mur ray, Dave Hauntz, Larry Jansscn and Bob Lewellyn witlr Jim Hamilton another starting possobility. Irishmen Vie In Boston Bout BostonIUH) - Boston fight fans are in a bit of a predica ment. Since they're probably the world's most loyal rooters of a home-bailiwick leather-tos-ser, particularly if he's Irish, they want to cheer whole heartedly for co-middleweight champion Paul Pender to beat Terry Downes of London in their title fight at the Boston Arena, Saturday night. Irish Pender of suburban Brookline, Mass., is defending his European-New York-Massachusetts version of the 160 pound crown against the champion of the British Isles. But now the B'ostonians learn that Downes is Irish, too. 0 (IN 20 COMET VETERAN - A vet eran and strong competitor for the Crater high Comet cagers is Tom White, above. White is in his third varsity season for Crater which plays at Grants Pass on Friday and at Medford on Saturday. He has tallied 39 points for the Comets and can be tough under the backboards. Medford will be host to Klamath Falls at 8:15 p.m. at Hedrick gvm in a Southern Oregon conference struggle. Klamath is ranked No. 1 in Oregon polls and Medford has been given No. 2 and No. 4 ratings. A jayvee conflict will be played at 6:30 p.m. at Hedrick between the two schools. At 6 p.m. at the senior high here, sophomore teams are to play. "We are really thinking of Klamath but are not overlook ing Crater," said Medford mentor Frank Roelandt. The Black Tornado will tussle Cra ter's Comets here Saturday evening. "We play the games one at a time and Klamath is first," declared the Tornado coach. Roelandt pronounced his club physically fit, as of last night and said "I think the kids are mentally ready." He added, "I think we can give them all they can handle." Medford aims will be to tighten up its defense and to keep its offense moving and get good shots, hitting quick ly. The Tornado will be up against a tall Klamath front line, headed by 6-7 all-stater Bruce Brickner. Tichenor Doing Well Showing tough as a back board man in drills for Med ford lias been John Tichenor. Roelandt indicated Tichenor as a possible starter but said that he could see a good bit of duty even if he doesn't start. The coach also noted improvement on the part of Mike Hood, said that Bruce Bray is doing good work on the boards and reported that Steve Hoots is coming along. Roelandt probably will start his three lettermen, Bob Quin ney, Dick Ragsdale and Jim Barry and complete his line up from among Scott Eaton, Stan Dowson and Tichenor. Likely lineup for Klamath strong club is Gary Patzke, Ray Taylor, Brickner, Wally Falmberg and Jvred Bichn. Klamath has some good re serve strength to back them. Although Medford defeated Crater in its conference open er, the Tornado is not taking the Comets lightly. "Crater is coming," Roelandt remarked. Jayvee and sophomore games with Crater will be at 6:30 p.m. on the Hedrick and senior high floors, respectively. o O n O PAGES 1 to 8 u q O TORNADO FORWARD-Scott Eaton, above, a junior 6-1 for ward with junior varsity ex perience before this season, has been a regular for the Medford high basketball crew this season.
