O 0 O O Mailorder Alligator Proves Too Much; Law Officers Are Called Monrovia, Calif. (UPD Mrs. Carol Benedictus' new mail order "pet" alligator was more than a little perturbed. The 18-inch reptile had been confined in a 3-by-6 inch box in a Postal trin frnm Kfiv Orleans to this Los Angeles suburb. When Mrs. Benedictus opened the package Monday she received anything but a cordial greeting. The 'gator sprang out, jaws clacking. "He snapped at me - you know, getting up on his legs in a defensive position," said Mrs. Benedictus. "I tried to corner him with a larger box, but I couldn't. "It finally chased me up on top of a table." Mrs. Benedictus bided her time. When she thought she could make it to the telephone without being nibbled at by the alligator, she jumped from the table top and called sher iff's deputies. Intrepid deputies soon cor raled the 'gator and placed it in a large pan containing some water. The alligator quickly stretched out and went to sleep. But Mrs. Benedictus' day of surprises wesn't over yet. When she had given the mail order firm $6 during a recent trip to New Orleans to send her the reptile, she thought the firm would place in the box whatever change she had M. B. LEONARD, SR. I looked in the box and there was a little turtle they had sent me to make up for the extra money I gave them." The turtle, at least, was ap parently happy and did . not snap at Mrs, Benedictus. Kennedy Urged To Broaden Program New York-WI'll - President elect John F. Kennedy was urged Tuesday to broaden even further plans for medical care for the aged under social se curity to bring in 14.5 mil lion persons at an annual cost of about $1 billion. A task force headed by Dr. Wilber J. Cohen, professor of public welfare administration at the University of Michigan recommended legislation which would go considerably beyon the Kennedy-Anderson bill which failed of passage in Congress last year. The $1 billion program would be financed by increas ing social security withhold ing taxes by one half of 1 per cent-one-fourth of one per cent to be paid by the em ployer and one-fouth by the employee. Mark Hatfield's plan for tighter food and liquor re strictions in bars will "drive bars catering to lower income groups out of business," Sen Vern Cook (D-Troutdale) said Monday. He said the proposal would abolish the "ordinary man's drinking establishment" and result in class discrimi nation. Mark Hatfield's proposals for tougher traffic provisions were inadequate. Sen. Alfred Corbctt (D-Port- land) loser to Sen. Harry Boivin for the Senate presi dency, said Monday after the! vole that "as far as personal relationships go, it will be a harmonious session." State Democratic Chairman Robert Straub, a Corbett back er, said "there will be no further controversy." "We lost and now we're go ing to work as effectively as we can," Straub said. S f I Belion Criticizes Hatfield's Plan Salem - (ITU - Slate. Treas urer Howard Belton says Gov. Mark Hatfield's message lo the legislature proposed add ed authority for the governor "without a corresponding concentration of responsibil ity." It was the second time Bel ton, a fellow Republican, has criticized Hatfield's legislative plans. Two weeks ago Belton joined Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr. in criti cizing Hatfield's cabinet gov ernment proposal, especially elimination of the State Board of Control. Belton said Hatfield's mes sage lanes government "one step further" from the people. He added that while he is "heartily" in favor of many of II a t field's recommenda tions, "some I cannot accept as practical or economically feasible.'1 mittces. to consider Gov. Mark Hatfield's pro posal to do away with the acting governor w h e n the governor is out of the slate. As Senate president during the last two years, Pearson served "about 146 days" as acting governor while Hat field traveled. The governor's recommen dation lo eliminate such a job came in his message to the legislature Monday. "In Ihese days of modern communication and transpor t a t i o n," Hatfield declared, "there is no more need for a temporary governor than Ihere is for a temporary presi dent." Pearson said he felt it was important to have an acting j governor available during the I governor's absence. A spokesman for the gov ernor said the proposal was1 "in no way" based on person alities or previous actions of acting governors. He said Hat field fell the $50 daily salary paid to the acting governor was an unnecessary expense for the stale. Pearson also said he op posed a proposal by Hatfield to make the secretary of state next in line of succession lo the governor, instead of the Senate presidenl.
