Many of the distracted par ents are at their wits' end try ing to handle the child. If he is a boy, he may beat up smaller children. Often he has a viol ent temper, and he may re fuse to be controlled either at home or at school. Because of a recent column on these problems, dozens of people have been writing me to say that I have described exactly what happened to their child. After the change in his character, he was treated by pediatricians and psychiatrists, but without re sult. Interestingly, a number of my correspondents say Hint when they brought my col umn to the attention of their psychiatrists, and pointed out how my description of the di sease tallied exactly with the nature of the Illness of their children and showed my rec ommendation that electroen cephalograms be made, their doctors were hostile to the 0:10 Wanlhfr r 8:13 Doug Kdwnrdl 6::i0 Hrd Sketton 7:00 Pony Express 7 30 Cheyenna fl SO UrtnutnK Up Buddy 9:00 Dunny Thomm 9.;ut Aflventum In ParadUt 10-:i0 Peter Gun THKM1AY 10:-I0 Murnlnf Nrwl 10:45 Copco Home Show 1 1 :Oti Morning t oun 11:311 l.ove Tlint Bob 19 00 L'amouflnee 12 30 Aft the World Tumi 1:00 Ahout rai-ei 1:30 Home Party 2:00 Dav in Cottrt 2 30 Road to HmlHy 3:00 IHlfihtcr Day 3:1.1 Secret Storm 3 30 t;,lse ot Nlfht 4:00 American ltandttantt 8:00 Chaplain's Corner 310 Tech Talks 8 30 Quick Draw Mc(irw 8 00 Six oTIiH-k Report 8:10 TV Wentherman 8:15 Dour Kriwards and Newl 6 30 Wtlhur St Mr. Kd 7 00 Expedition 7:30 Heal ol Post 8 00 The llltlcman 8 30 Wvatt Karp 8 00 Staaecoiich Wei 10 00 Alcoa Precnls 10:30 Oarry Moore UiJIIT'C TV RADIO IIHLI I) SKItVICK "Oldiit Shop In So. Fortunately; in other cases, the doctor welcomed the suggestion; he had electro encephalograms made, and they showed a definite area on one side of the head where evidently the child had suf fered an inflammation of the brain due to a virus, perhaps the one thijt caused the. se vere attack of measles, or whatever it was. What Can Be DoneT Now, the question is, what can be done? Unfortunately, in many of the cases in which parents have written me, the child evidently suffered the cncephalitic injury so many years ago that I doubt if any thing can be done today. In other cases, in which the at tack of encephalitis was re cent, it would be worth while to try the Dexedrlne which works beautifully In some of those cases and, overnight, causes the child to brighten up and do well in school. In cer tain types of encephalitis there is a good chance that the child will come out of the ill ness all right. In many cases of problem children, the electroencephal ograms show a dysrhythmia or abnormal type of record all over the brain, suggesting a seizure-less form of mild epil epsy. In such cases, especially if there is some poor nervous heredity in the family, the physician would do well to try an anti-convulsive drug like Dilantin which sometimes quickly works a miracle. Loit Nightmares Just this week I saw a boy of this type who, when put on Dilantin, immediately lost his awful nightmares: he lost much of his violent temper; and he began to do much bet ter In school. In all these cases a good man to see, if he can be found, perhaps in a nearby large city, will be a neurologist. He will know much more about this problem than I do. He will doubtless be able to tell the parents where they can gel electroencephalograms made.: These are records of the tiny electric currents constantly being formed In the brain. Un fortunately, the test usually costs from $25 to $H5. and a appointment must be mad. A high percentage of .nig .
