The couple's sons and daughters were hosts ior the event. The Caldwells have lived in Oregon since 1937. (Simonson-Walker photo) Phoenix Couple Honored On Golden Anniversary Phoenix - Children of Mr. and Mrs. Walker M. Caldwell 403 Second street, held open house January 1 to celebrate the 50lh wedding anniversary of their parents. About 50 friends called at the couple's home from two to five o'clock in the afternoon. An arrangement of gold and white chrysanthemums center ed the lace covered table for the event. Mrs. Horace Root, a daughter, cut and served the decorated cake and Mrs. Richard Marsh, another daughter, poured coffee. Tea was poured by Mrs. Lewis Caldwell, a daughter-in-law, and Loretta Caldwell was in charge of the guest book. Margie Root assisted with the gifts. Visitors included the Rev. William Saladln of Phoenix Presbyterian church and Mrs. Saladin; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Clark, Trail; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Douglas and sons, Jim my and Gerry; and Mr. and Mrs. George Osier, Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell were married December 28, 1010, at the home of the CMJMIIMiTC. Mrs. Caldwell, the former Anna Bradbury, was born in Wappingers Falls, New York, and moved to Kansas with her parents when she was 15 years old. Mr. Caldwell was born In Culver. The family moved to Ore gon in August, 1937, and to Phoenix the following Decern ber. Queen Helen's theme of "Winter Enchantment" was used in her colors of royal blue and white. Myriads of blue fronds centered with si 1 ver bells were hung above the dais, to the left of which was a grouping of silvered firs. Large snowflakes decorated the velvet curtains. Blue me tallic medallions and frosted fir trees decorated the dining room. A while tulle tree top ped with a gold star centered the table on which the queen a cake of blue and while had been placed. Bouquets of white carnations completed the picture. The decorating had been done by the Misses Janet Hobbs, Virginia Wilson, June Hopkins and Janice Ay res, and their mothers. Mrs. Purdy and Mr. Stew art were presented their past guardian and associate guar dian pins. At an addendum following the ceremonies, Miss Sue Kel ley performed a dance. "Win ter Enchantment" written by Mrs. Scott Hamilton in honor of the occasion was read by retiring Queen Rebecca. Queen Helen was given her Job's doll dressed in a replica of her gown of white scalloped Chantilly lace with royal blue satin cummerbund. Refreshments for the recep tion and dance which followed were served by the Misses Judy Patterson, Sandra Beas ly, Sue Kelley and Jeri Gard ner with assistance from their mothers. Coming Events Announced for Post, Auxiliary A number of coming events were announced last week by Crater Lake post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and auxiliary. Monday, January 9, auxil iary members will provide en tertainment and serve refresh ments for the Camp White post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. January 12 the auxiliary sewing club will hold a reve lation party at the home of Mrs. Ben Allison, 1027 West Tenth street. Luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. with Mrs. E. G. Hcims as chairman and secret pals will be revealed.- January 17 the post and auxiliary will hold a baked ham dinner at 6:30 p.m. to honor all past commandors of the post and past presidents of the auxiliary. Richard Schulz and Mrs. Russell Zundel are chairmen. At the last meeting of the auxiliary, Mrs. Ben Allison Americanism chairman, spoke concerning an article written by Carol Stewart on "What it means to be an American." Mrs. Arthur Tomlin served cakes made to represent veter ans, and iced to resemble a soldier's uniform. At a Christmas party of the auxiliary, several members of Girl Scout Troop 130 enter tained. Participating were Lois Henry, Kim Maueh, Shir ley Anderson, Sheila Llewel lyn, Karon Baldwin and Kathy Jennings. Bach Workshop Held for Pupils A Bach workshop for piano pupils of Mrs. D. F. lluson was held Thursday, December 29, at Purucker Piano house. The group is preparing for the Oregon Music Teachers asso ciation examinations which will be this spring, and for which they will be required lo play a Bach composition. (Knackstedt photo) Week's Activities Listed For Senior Activity Center The Senior Activity Center opens its third year of service to retired citizens of Jackson county with a full schedule of classes and activities start ing Monday, January 9 During the holiday season some of the groups took a va cation, but even with fewer classes meeting, attendance for December rose lo more than 200. A 100 per cent in crease in use of the small building at 601 East Jackson street, during 1960 has en couraged the Center commit tee to continue its efforts to obtain larger quarters during the coming year. The year's guest list shows that 2,552 seniors have participated in the programs offered. All the activities are free and avail able to all persons over 50 years of age. The Arm Chair Travel group will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, January 9, to view colored pictures of Europe which will be shown by Wil liam Pickell. Mr. Pickell trav eled lo Europe with his grand daughter, Miss Gloria Hag gard, in a college tour group. This is Mr. Pickell's second time to show pictures. Dr. Frank Roberts is the leader of the Arm Chair Trav el group and is assisted by Mrs. Lillian Greenman and Bill Jones. Monday at 7:30 p.m. the beginning Spanish group will start its second scries of class es taught by Mrs. Victor Birds eye. Twenty-two persons join ed this class last fall and newcomers are welcome. Mrs. Edith Whillock is the hostess. Tuesday the oil painting class will meet at 1 p.m. un der the direction of Mrs. Vic toria Staley with Mrs. Alva Reed, hostess. Wednesday at 1 p.m. the woodcarving and clay sculp ture class will meet with Glenn VanWickle of White City as teacher and Miss Glad ys Eaton as hostess. Thursday at 10 a.m. the advanced Spanish class taught by Mrs. Charles Furnas, with Mrs. C. D. Thatcher as host ess, will continue to study. This class has been meeting for two years. Orchestra Session Thursday afternoon the Sen ior Center Orchestra, under the leadership of Edward Root, will continue its weekly sessions. The group started in March, 1959. The orchestra has grown steadily in size, it was announced, and has played for clubs, churches and service organizations as well as given public concerts. Mrs. Ena Foss and M r s. Taylor Family In California Mr. and Mrs. Oliver P. Tay lor and their children, Janice, Denna and Greg, 3254 Jack sonville highway, have re turned home after spending some time in southern Cali fornia with relatives. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Raymond, Pacific Palisades, and Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Moy, Garden Grove. The Taylors saw Disney land, Marineland and Knotts Berry farm. The latter place was loured with Mrs. Peter Gerlson, Ashland, who is the guest of relatives in Anaheim and will return to Ashland January 15. The Medford family re turned to San Francisco De cember 30 to attend the Shrine East-West football game. Their daughter, Janice played with the Medford High school band for the game, and continued home with her family. Cozzoi'os Return Hornbrook - Mrs. Melvin Cozzalio and children have re turned from Sacramento where they spent a week with Mr. Cozzalio. Formerly deputv in the Siskiyou county sheriff's office. Mr. Cozzalio was recently transferred to the state law enforcement of fice in the capital. His wife is a teacher in the Yreka High school. Other relatives introduced were her grandmother, Mrs. Caroline Harding, and her aunt, Mrs. Thomas Denninger, both of Trail. Presented Gavel Mr. Hume presented Queen Joey with her gavel and a poem which he had written for the occasion. Mrs. Aileen Eastin, guardian of the bethel, presented Queen Joey with her tiara. The room was decorated according to the theme "Blue Birds of Happiness." In the addenda, retiring Honored Queen Jackie pre sented Queen Joey with lilac perfume and Senior Princess Eda Larson presented her a scrapbook from the line offi cers. At the reception a cake was served by the guardian coun cil of the bethel. A dance was held after ward for the bethel members and their guests.
