Elrod, former Talent Residents now living in Eu- igene, were honored at an ; open house December 26 at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr.'and Mrs. .R. M. Elrod, Anderson Creek, Talent. The event was in honor of .the couple's 50th wedding an-, riiversary. Mr. and Mrs. Elrod lived in Talent from 1943 to 1960 where Mr. Elrod was. in the cattle business and was former owner of the Talent Trout Farm. ' About 34 relatives and friends attended. Mrs. Samuel Elrod cut and seged the an- "niversary cake and Miss Judy Bagley presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. William Bagley poured coffee and Miss Chris tie Elrod, granddaughter of the honored couple, was in .charge of the guest book. Get Together Club Announces Meeting ; Members of the Get To gether club will meet Friday at 1 p.m. in Girls Community club for a covered dish lunch eon. Gold Hill-Miss Jean Cun ningham left Christmas day -to spend . several days at Winema with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cunningham. Miss Cunningham is minister of the Gold Hill, Christian .church and her father is min Isler of the Southside Chris tian church at Lebanon. Club Discontinues Custom of Drawing Secret Friend Names Gold Hill - Mrs. William Ferguson was hostess for the annual December party of the Past Noble Grands club of Amethyst Rebekah lodge. Mrs. Earl Moore and Mrs. Lester Parker were co-hostesses. The business session was conducted by Mrs. Jerry Her rington, vice president of the club, in the absence of t h e president, Mrs. Clarence Pars ley. Amethyst Secret friends were revealed during the so cial hour. The group voted to discontinue drawing names for secret Amethyst friends. This has been a custom of the group for more than 30 years. Mrs. Daniel Stewart will entertain the club at her home Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. Conservation Club Topic Central Point - Dr. Elmo Stevenson, president of the Southern Oregon college, will speak on "Conservation of our natural resources" at a meet ing of Central Point Garden club January 4. The meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Earnest Reams, crater Lake highway. Hostesses will be Mrs. Reames, Mrs. Everett Young and Ivan Skyrman. Members will bring displays of foliage and berries. A report on the "Cut and Dried" show held recently in me county courthouse was made at the c 1 u b's recent meeting at the home of Mrs. Don E. Faber. Mrs. Don A. Faber served as hostess, as. sisted by Mrs. Josephine Cor nutt and Mrs. Signe Day. Mrs. Day and Mrs. Robert Schmidt won prizes. Special guests were Mrs. Elizabeth Faber, Mrs. A. Johnston, and members of the Central Point Home Extension unit. Announcement was made of a landscape study course, which will be held in Corval lis January 12-14. Dish Gardens Given as Gifts Gold Hill - Dish gardens that were made by members of the Gold Hill Garden club were given to several shut- ins in this community. This was a Christmas-time project of the club. Mrs. Ferd Jones delivered the gifts on behalf of the group. The annual party was held at the home of Mrs. William Fields. The business session was conducted by Mrs. Gervas Southall, retiring president of the club, Guests were Mrs. Ralph Chapin and Mrs. Linabelle Deck, Rogue River. Conducted Installation At a dinner at Kim's Res taurant Wednesday evening, Mrs. George Watson was in stalled as Medford Toastmis tress club president. Mrs. J. D. Brummond is the new vice president, and Mrs. J. W. Poage, secretary. . The installing officer was Mrs. C. A. Thatcher. Each new officer was given a corsage in the club colors of gold and blue. The club presented Mrs. Richard L. Williams with a past-president's pin. Mrs. Wil liams presided at the meeting. Guests from the Grants Pass Toastmistress club were Miss Louise Ramsey, Miss Alberta Shoemake, Mrs. Alfred Bab cock, and Mrs, Kenneth Good rich. Mrs. Goodrich is also second vice-chairman of Coun cil 4. Toastmistress of the evening was Mrs. Roy Rolls. A speech by Mrs. Brummond entitled "I Resolved" concerned new years resolutions. Mrs. Don Marin in her speech, "Nellie Rolled Out the Barrel," told of the life of the writer and business woman Elizabeth Cochran or Nellie Bly. Mrs. Kenneth Goodrich read a Christmas Story, "The Angel Wouldn't Sing." "Some Not New Thoughts on a Not New Subject" by Mrs. Bernice Kunzman brought Bible quo tations and referencesOdepict ing various emotions. As lexicologist Mrs. Watson had the club members recall words which had been empa- sized by lexicologists through out recent months and give the definitions of these words. The topicmistress Mrs. Elmer Ness, using Edlr Allen Poe's poem, "The Bells," asked sev eral persons to give impromp tu short speeches concerning thoughts associated with speci fied words suggested by the poem. The grammarian was Miss Voda Browcr. Mrs. Al fred Babcock was the speech evaluator and Mrs. Amy True program evaluator. A feature of the meeting was practice in the use of the microphone. Medford Couple Observes 50th IV idding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Her- ters, Malta Commandery of bcrt Gregory, 829 East Jack son street, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday, December 24, at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ron ald H. Gandee. Traditional "gold" decorations, which were arranged throughout the house, included a small gold sprayed tree witli gold foil- wrapped money hanging from the branches. Mrs. Gandee and Mrs. Ralph Cook, another daughter of the Gregorys, entertained with a family dinner. Mrs. Gregory cut the v?eddini cake with the same silver knife given to and used by her granddaughter, the forme? Barbara Cook, ax her wed ding in 1959. Friends of the couple call ed during the afternoon. They included the Rev. Fred Evans, minister of First Christian church, and Mrs. Evans, o Mr. and Mrs. Gregory were married December 24, 1910, in Cleveland, Ohio, at the par sonage of Cyril Avenue Pres byterian church, with the Rev, John Muscil officiating. Mrs Gregory is the former Julia Estelle Vajrok, whose parents came from CsAtaslovakia. Three daughters and one son were born in the United Slates. Mrs. Gregory was born in Cleveland, Ohio, October 31, 1892, and Mr. Gregory was born in Independence, Kan sas, January 14, 1888, one of three sons and two daughters. As a boy he lived in Geneva, Ohio, and recalls that he once drove a team on a milk route, He also worked as a ship ping clerk and a machinist ap prentice before moving to Portland in 1913 to become an employee of the Southern Pacific Roalroad company. The couple also lived In Og den, Utah, and California be foR? coming to Medford in 1929. He was a machinist for the Medford orpgration for ten years, and in 1946 bought half interest in the General Machine Woflks where he worked until his retirement in March, 1960. Both the Gregorys are mem bers of First Christian church and were charter members of that church ia Ogden. He served as treasurer in the Medford church for 15 years, and also as a deacon.- She has been a Bible school teacher for 40 years and has worked in various capucities in the church s womens activi ties. In addition to church mem bership, the couple has been active in local lodges. He is a member of the Odd Fellows, Masonic lodge, Royal Arch Masons. Table Rock council 15, of Royal and Select Mas- Knights Templar, Hillah Tem ple of the Shrine, Reames chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and Roxy Ann court, Order of Amaranth. Groups with which Mrs. Gregory has worked include the Rebekah lodge, in which she has been a member for 38 years. She has served as noble grand, as well as in other of fices in two lodges. She is also a member of various Re bekah auxiliaries, of Reames chapter and Roxy Ann court. Girl Scouts Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts of Eagle Point and their leaders were guests of Seversen's candy factory for a recent evening. They were shown how several types of candy are made including the candy canes, Pearfection, chocolate covered nuts and drops. Girls and leaders taking the tour of Seversen's were Jackie Smith, Louise Harris, Sharon Frischman, Carolyn Stone, Sandra Algeo and their leader, Mrs. Orvllle Stone; Brownies Kathy Fowler, Lin da Nolen, Tonya Harbison, Patsy Binker, Mara Linn Rab er, Janice Dover and their leaders, Mrs. David Harbison and Mrs. Elmer Binker, and Keith. The girls held a Christmas party Tuesday evening with Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. Dover and Mrs. Raber also present as guests. Each girl took home the ceramic gifts they made for their parents. Illinois Valley Group Has Meeting Illinois Valley - Blue Star Mothers in Illinos Valley met recently in World War I hall. Christmas greenery decorated tables for the potluck luncheon. They were greeted by thousands of young Irishmen and women who defied police barriers at the airport. It was the first visit to Ire land by a member of the Brit ish royal family In 32 years. Irish uthoritlcs, fearing pro test demonstrations by anti British Irish Republicans, took strict security measures to protect the couple. There was no official wel come for the princess and her husband when they landed in an Acr Llngus plane from London. But they were grceU cd by crowds that had stream ed to the airport since early morning by bicycle, bus and car. Some youths said they walked as far as eight miles to be on hand. Airport Ringed Picked agents of the detec tive special branch ringed the airport as the airliner, which carried 40 other tourist-class passengers, arrived. The airport was jammed with onlookers who crushed against police to catch a glimpse of Margaret and the commoner who won her heart. The couple will visit Ire land for 12 days. At Shannon Airport, bomb threats were received but loc al police Chief Jim McDon- agh dismissed them. The last time a member of the British royal family visit ed Ireland, the car in which she was riding was damaged by demonstrators. That was In 1928 and the visitor was the Dowager Countess of Hare wood, the princess royal, who is Queen Ellzcbcth's aunt. Margaret and her husband planned to spend New Year's eve with Mr. Armstrong Jones' mother, the Countess of Rosse, at Birr castle in County Affuly, about 65 miles from Shannon. Program Planned For Study Club Mrs. Edith Swartsley and Mrs. Rita Miller will give a program for a meeting of Wednesday Study club, Wednesday, January 4, at Girl's Community club. Mrs. Swartsley will review, "Look Southward, Uncle," and Mrs. Miller will present a selected subject.
