'Shower' for Nixon
Salem-IUPll-Ropublican Gov.
Mark Hatfield today proposed
a national "birthday card
shower" for Vice President
Richard M. Nixon on Jan. 9,
Nixon's 48th birthday.
Nixon leaves the vice presi
dency Jan. 20.
Hatfield, who nominated
Nixon for president at the
GOP national convention
said "in victory as well as in
defeat he showed his measure.
and in the latter he earned
the respect of his opponent."
"In our lifetime we will
doubtless never see again an
election as close," Hatfield
said. "A vote of thanks might
well be expressed through a
birthday card shower ad
dressed lo him in Wash
ington."
