FRIDAY, 1957 Award of Merit Winner ill' Three Sermons Given For Sunday Central Point Sunday the Rev. Robert T. Bridge will bo the guest speaker at the Cen tral Point Presbyterian church. His sermon will bo entitled "The Meaning of Life". A coffee hour will fol low the worship service. Sunday school will be held for all departments except the Adult Bible class. There will be no junior church service. All parents have been asked to lake their children into the sanctuary for the morning service. Also the Westminster Fellowship will not meet Sun day evening. Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. there will be a Joint meeting of the session and the board of deacons at the church. The choir will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. under the direcllon of Mrs. Lorna Meyer. Jacksonville The sacra ment of communion will be celebrated Sunday during the worship service at First Pres byterian church, Jacksonville, The Rev. King K. Jones, min ister, will give the communion meditation. A sextet composed of Mrs. Dave Allen, Mrs. Rafe Anders, Mrs. Furman Evern ham, Mrs. Melvln Hall, Mrs. Olto Niedermeyer, and Mrs. Wcs Worden, will sing "Trust in the Lord." The Jacksonville Westmin ster Fellowship will hold Its first fireside meeting of the new year in the home of Bruce Niederemeyor. The pas tor will give a brief talk on "How to Make Jesus Feel Wel come in Our Lives." The meet ing will conclude with games and refreshments. Phoenix This Sunday Is communion Sunday at First Presbyterian church, Phoenix. The Rev. William Saladln, minister, will speak on "The Twilight Zone," at the 11 a.m. service. Saturday, New Year's Eve, a party and film for the young people of the church and their friends are scheduled. New Year's Day Services Planned Day at First Baptist church will begin with Sunday school at 0:40 a.m., with classes be ginning a new quarter of study. The Rev. Edward C. Stauf fer, pastor, will speak at the 11 a.m. worship hour on the subject, "1061 My Millstone or Mliestone-Which?" Music will be directed by Maynnrd Hadley and will Include a number by the chapel choir. The youth leagues for' those of junior college age will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m., and the adult Bible study, taught by Albert Gandt, will meet at the same hour. At the 7:45 p.m. hour, a New Year's candlelight com munion service will be a purl of the worship program. Pas tor Stauffer will give a mes sage entitled, "The Forward Look," and' the youth choir, led by Charles Church, will sing. The First Baptist church is located in downtown Mcdford at the. corner of North Cen tral st. and Fifth ave. Congregationalists Announce Schedule Worship at the Congrega tional church on New Years Day will return to the usual 10 a.m. hour, with the church school meeting at the same time. The communion of the Lord's Supper will be cele brated at the church service. The sermon by the Rev. Thomas McCamant will be on, "At the Gate of the Year". The Pilgrim Fellowship will meet Sunday at 7 p.m. with the Fellowship commis sion In charge of the topic, "What Makes Good TV?" The Laymen's Breakfast will be Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. with Duane Richardson as the leader. Ashland Sermon Told for Sunday Ashland "Living in 1961" will be the sermon subject Sunday by Dr. P. Malcolm Hammond, minister, at First Methodist church, North Main and Laurel sis., Ashland. .The junior sermon will be "A Clean Sheet." Sunday at 6 p.m. a New Year's day potluck dinner for the entire family will be held. Dr. Hammond will speak on "My Years in New England" and show colored slides. Witnesses Schedule Public Talk Sunday A public talk will be given Sunday at 4 p.m. at the King dom hall of Jehovah's Wlt- n esses, 2402 Jacksonville highway. The subject of the talk is "What Is God's Way lo Salvation: A. Molinsky, the speaker, will give Scrip tural answers to questions such as "Salvation From What?" and "Why can no one ignore it?" Directly following the talk the congregation will partici pate in discussing the Watch tower article "Married Be lievers Called to Peace and Salvation". The study groups held on Tuesday night will continue to discuss the material cov ered in the book "You May Survive Armageddon Into God's New World". A number of local Jeho vah's Witnesses will attend the circuit convention at the municipal auditorium, Eure ka, Calif., Jan. 6 to U. Harlan S. Nixon, presiding minister of the Mcdford con gregation, announced that the last volume of the Now World Translation, released last summer, will be featured in many of the talks. Jacksonville Church To Hold Services Jacksonville - The Jackson ville Bible church will hold a watch night service Satur day from 8 p.m. until mid night at the home of the pas tor, the Rev. James R. Hend ricks, 404 South Oregon St., Jacksonville. The film, "Contrary Winds" will be shown to friends and members of the church. Sunday at the 11 a.m. serv ice Mr. Hendricks will speak at the church, across from the museum on "Security." His 7 p.m. sermon will be "The Opening of Christ's Transi tory Gates." Central Church Plans Watch Party Saturday Central Church of Christ, North Central ave. at Jackson st., will see the New Year in with a watch party beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday and con tinuing until midnight. There will be games and refresh ments with a devotional just prior to midnight. "Hitherto and Henceforth" will be the topic of the Jan. 1 morning message by min ister John V. Heberllng. A gospel solo will be brought by Mrs. Jane Johnson. Wor ship begins at 11 a.m. "The Gosepl of the Son of God" will be the subject of the adult and youth Bible School lesions. Sunday marks the beginning of a new quar ter of study In all depart ments. Bible school at Central Church begins at 9:45 a.m. "Why Should The Work Cease?" Is Mr. Heberling's evening sermon subject. The message is based on the in spiring story of Nehemiah's struggle to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Sun day worship service at First Assembly of God, 1108 West Main st. The Rev. R. E. Cull, pastor, will speak on the top ic, "What Christ Expects Of Us In 1961." A ministers' institute has been scheduled for Jan. 5 and 6 at First Assembly for As sembly of God ministers in southern Oregon. The Institute will bo under the direction of the Rev. R. M. Riggs, former general superintendent of As sembly of God churches. Morning and afternoon ses sions are for ministers only, but both evening services are open to the public. New Year's Resolutions Described as Religious Act By LOUIS CASSELS United Press International It is time that someone put in a good word for New Year's resolutions. Comic strip artists and TV gag writers have almost lam pooned this custom out of existence. Things have reached the point where anyone who does make a serious New Year's resolution is ashamed to admit it, lest he be greeted with ridicule. This is a pity, because there is nothing inherently absurd about pausing on the thresh hold of a new year to take stock of your life and habits Services Listed For 1st Christian "How to be. Successful in 1961" is the title of the ser mon which the Rev. Fredrick Ross Evans will preach at both services Sunday morning at the First Christian church At the first service the youth choir will sing "Father Lead Me Day by Day." Tuesday the departments of the church will meet at 7 p.m. to be followed by the official board meeting at 8 p.m. Board members will vote on the hiring of an architect for the 'new building and to set a price on the present buildings. Mr. Evans will attend a slate educational commission meeting in Springfield this week. Both he and the Rev. Glenn McKerrow, associate minister, will attend the Northwest Preachers Parlia ment in Eugene Tuesday through Thursday. Series Scheduled For Nazarenes The New Year's Day wor ship services at the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st., will include music and a sermon by the Rev. Harold M. Sanner, pas tor. "Evangelism First" is the general theme of the denom ination for the next four years. The pastor will give a series of messages on the Book of Hebrews. The subject will be "God Speaks Again." Sun day's 11 a.m. service, broad cast over radio station KDOV, will be "The Better Saviour." Subject in the series for the 7 p.m. service will be "The Enduring Saviour." Music for the morning wor ship service' will be by the sanctuary choir and a duet by Mrs. Joe Johnson and Mrs. Irving McDonald. Roundtable Topic Told For Sunday "The coming of a new year is a time for evaluation and prediction in many areas of life. What would be your commentary on the spiritual state of the world for 1961? By what significant facts or signs can we judge whether we are In a time of progress or decline of Christianity in the world? Feels An Impulse Anyone who does it with reasonably honesty is bound to feel an impulse to narrow the gap between what he is and what he knows he ought to be. There are three things you can do about this impulse: 1. You can ignore it until it goes away - which it will do rather, quickly. 2. You can work it off by making a lot of emotional promises to live better." 3. You can translate it into specific commitments and de cisions. , . The Rt. Rev. William F. Creighton, Episcopal bishop coadjustor of Washington, D.C., believes that alternative Number 2 is no better, and perhaps worse, than Number 1. Catholics List Sunday Masses Special thanksgiving serv ices will be held in Sacred Heart Catholic church New Year's Eve, starting at 7:30 p.m. According to the Very Rev, Carl Mai, pastor of the parish, prayers will be offered in gratitude for all favors and blessings received during the past year. The services will close with benediction of the blessed sacrament. All Sacred Heart parishion ers and their friends are in vited to attend the thanksgiv ing devotions. Since Nevy Year's Day falls on ' Sunday this year, the regular Sunday schedule of masses, rather than the holy day schedule, will be followed in all Catholic churches of the area. Masses in Sacred Heart church, Medford, are at 6, 7, 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. and at 7 p.m. At Jacksonville mass will be said at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's church. There will be mass in Our Lady of Fatima church at Shady Cove at 10 a.m. Methodists Tell Sermon Subject Dr. George Roseberry of First Methodist church, will preach on "God's Time Is Now" for the New Year's Day sermon at 9:30 and 11 a.m. The youth choir will sing "Ancient Of Days" for the 9:30 a.m. service. Mrs. D. G. MacDougall will sing "The Lord Is My Light" at each of the services. The chancel choir will sing "Praise Ye The Lord of Hosts" for the 11 a.m. service. The Methodist Youth Fel lowship will go to Dead In dian for a spiritual retreat to day through Sunday. An all MYF council meet ing will be held Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the church. Adventists Hold Missions Offering The Seventh-day Adventist Sabbath school members of the Medford and Valley View churches joined with their fellow believers throughout North America in a pre-Christ-mas special missions offering last Saturday morning. It was the quarterly Thir teenth Sabbath offering, being given this time to the denomi nations work in Central America. The members of the two local churches gave S481.73 which will help to build a nurse's home for the Adventist hospital in Nicar agua, a new hospital building for British Guiana, and a boy's dormitory for the church's boarding academy in Puerto Rico. UNITY SUBJECT "In the Beginning, God" will be the Unity devotional subject Sunday at the 11 a.m. service at Haven and Holly sts. The Rev. Katharine Bos worth, minister, will speak. All classes study in Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland will resume following a holiday recess. TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE. "People have become cyni cal about New Year's resolu tions because they are so seldom kept," he said in an interview. "And one reason they are seldom kept is that they are usually couched in sweeping generalities." Must Have Goal The only kind of resolution that is likely to have any real impact on your life, Bishop .Creighton said, is "one that 'commits you to a specific course of action that is clearly within your power to carry out." For example, he said, sup pose that your conscience is troubled about racial bias. You aren't going to accom plish much, if anything, with a vow to eliminate prejudice from your heart. "But you might achieve that end if you made and kept a more modest resolution: Namely, to establish real, human relationships with par ticular Individuals of another race." By the same token, the bishop said, it would be an Idle gesture to promise on New Year's Day that you will be "more devout" or "lead a better Christian life" dur ing 1961. "If you really want to move In that direction," he said, "you will get farther by com mitting yourself to specific new habits of devotion and obedience." Club To Be Started By Sunday School Gold Hill - A fifty-two club will be started at Gold Hill Christian church Sunday school on Jan. 1. It will be a project for members of the junior Sunday school class who have perfect attendance during 1961. Mrs. Leonard Andrews is teacher for this group. Mrs. Rex Allison, superin tendent of the Sunday school, reported that a mystery per son of the Sunday school will be honored during a service. Recognition will be given one person once each month. "Go With God" will be the title of the sermon subject by Miss Jean Cunningham, min ister of the church Sunday at 11 a.m. The Bible study and prayer group will meet Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George A.
