SIPCDHBTTS Australia Keeps Cup Sydney, Australia-IUPD-Aus tralia retained the Davis Cup for the ninth time in the last 11 years today when Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson de feated Italy's Nicola Pietran geli and Orlando Sirola, 10-8, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the doubles match of the challenge match. The victory gave the Aus tralians an unbeatable 3-0 ad vantage in the best-of-fivc se ries and reduced Wednesday's final two singles matches to exhibitions. DpoiH Imurine Corpvntisn Philadelphia Whips Packers for NFL Philadelphia - (UPD - Norm Van Brocklin's passing and Ted Dean's 58-yard return of a kickoff were credited today as the deciding factors in the Philadelphia Eagles' 17-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the National league championship game. The authority was Vince Lombardi, coach of the crest fall Packers, who mourned that "we had the breaks at the beginning of the game and didn't cash in on them." Lombardi was speaking of the Eagles halting the Pack ers' powerful ground attack on the 6 and on the 13-yard lines minutes after the open ing kickoff Monday. Philadelphia Coach Buck Buckeyes Retain Top UPI Rating New York-IUPU-Ohlo State, voted tops in the nation for the fourth straight week by the United Press Intcrnation a,l puts Its No. 1 rating on the line tonight against a tough field in the Holiday Basketball Festival at Madi son Square Garden. The Buckeyes, with a 6-0 record, were the first choice of 33 of the 35 leading coach es who make up the UPI rat ing board. Their total of 348 points was just two short of a perfect score. Bradley remained runner up for the fourth week in a row; St. John's N.Y. advanced to the No. 3 ranking, and St. Louis University and Duke moved up in the top 10 group Bradley 8-0 and St. Bona venture 7-0 received the first place votes that did not go to Ohio State this week. Following third-ranked St. John's, these teams rounded out the lop 10 in order: In diana, St. Bonavcnture, St. Louis, UCLA, Detroit, Louis ville and Duke. North Carolina was rated 11th this week, followed by Kansas State. Kansas and Au burn were tied for 13th place, California was 15th, with 15th, with Providence and Vandcrbilt tied for 16th. Utah, Memphis State and North Carolina State rounded out the second 10 group. Van Brocklin Retiroi At the same time, Van Brocklin, a 12-year veteran who was named by the UPI as the league's most valuable player, made it official that he too was retiring. The Eagles line, holding when it had to; Van Brocklin clicking with passes when it was a must, and Dean's critic al kickoff return enabled the Southern Oregon Circuit Opens Basketball Slate With Thursday Scuffles This week's prep basketball in this area will feature the opening of the Southern Ore gon conference campaign and a tournament involving four members of the Rogue league. The conflicts are concen trated on Thursday and Fri day. In the SO circuit Mcdford plays Crater at Central Point and Grants Pass goes to Ash land on Friday. On Saturday Mcdford entertains Ashland and Crater travels to Klam ath Falls. Mcdford is defend ing champion. Other vacation lme prep hoop contention will be at Cave Junction. For the Eagles, a Cinderella team that finished last just three season ago, it was their eighth come-from-behind vic tory of the year. The Birds were trailing 13-10 when Dean, a remarkable rookie fullback subbing for injured Clarence Peaks, plunged over from the five at 5:21 of the fourth quarter. Shaw, Van Brocklin Retire By JOHN CLANCY United Press International Philadelphia - (UPD - Coach Lawrence (Buck) Shaw and quarterback Norm Van Brock lin, two of the brightest feathers in the crown of the world champion Philadelphia Eagles, headed into retire ment today with the fans still cheering. For Shaw, it was goodbye to football after 39 seasons of coaching. "I'm going back to my busi ness," he said, referring to the Royal Container Co., a corrugated box manufactur ing firm he operates in San Francisco. "I don't want any more head coaching. "I've said all along I was going to retire. I wanted this championship though, and the boys gave it to me." Has No Plans Van Brocklin, the wizard of the aerials, hung up his cleats without a notion of what the future holds for him. "I'm just too happy to think about it," he said. Once again the Philadelphia defense proved too much and the Packers were forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Hornung which put them in front 3-0 at 6:20 of the first quarter. Hornung came through with another field goal, from the 23, early In the second quarter to put 'the Packers out in front 6-0. Then Van Brocklin, who was voted by the sports writ ers as the most valuable play er, began to click. The "Dutch man" hit Tommy McDonald happiness some day as I have today. Winning the world championship of football is great. "I'm living today really living. Let tomorrow take care of itself." The Dutchman didn't even know what he would do dur ing the off season. "I'll think about it later in the year-1961 that is," he said. Reminded that Shaw's re tirement at the same time left an opening on the Eagles staff Van Brocklin was asked whether he would like to suc ceed him as coach of the Phil adelphia team. "They've never talked to me about it," Van Brocklin said "I told them some time ago that this was my last year so they could protect them selves in the draft. The Eagles, who each earn ed $5,116, walked off with their fourth NFL crown and their first since they defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 14-0, 11 years ago. Each of the Packers took home $3,105. It was their first title game since 1944 when they downed the New York Giants, 14-7. Asked why he was retiring at this time when he could probably demand a high sal ary as a championship team quarterback, Van Brocklin replied that "playing for mon ey alone is no good." "You shouldn't stick around when you can't help them any longer," he said. "You only hurt them and you hurt the game. "I'm retiring now when I'm at the top," he added. "It's like . retiring unbeaten even though I know I'm not. I've had plenty of bumps in my time. But this year makes it all worth it. SCHEDULE EXHIBITION Greenville, S.
