Dial SP2-61 4.1 6 D THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, I960 Book Drive Being Conducted at SOC Ashland - Books for Asian students is the incentive for a book drive now being con ducted among students and faculty at Southern Oregon college, and lasting until the first of winter term. Handling the drive is the SOC chapter of the Student Oregon Educa tion association. "Since Southern Oregon col lege ranked first in the United Slates last year in the num ber of books collected in this drive, students hope to main tain their top position," Glen Frakes, president of the SOEA, said. The people of Ashland and the nearby area are encour aged to participate by donat ing university, college and sec ondary level books in good condition published before 1945. Works by standard au thors published before 1 945, such as by Dickens, Haw thorne, Hemingway, and Pla to, are also needed. No foreign language books are needed on the secondary level, according to the stu dent affairs office at the col lege, which is in charge of student pick-up service. If resi dents have books to donate, they may call MUrdock 2-4611 for the office of student af fairs. Program Series Set By Southern Oregon Ashland-A series of televi sion programs on Japanese culture will be presented by Mrs. Makiko Do! on the "High er Education and You" show on KBES-TV beginning Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. Jointly sponsored by South ern Oregon college and the general extension division, the lecture program will continue for six weeks, and cover varied aspects of the culture of Japan such as the language, floral arrangement, origami (the art of paper folding), cus toms and manners, and the kimono. . Mrs. Doi is a native of Japan where she received her bachelor's degree from the Notre Dame Guild college, She moved to the United States to attend the College of the Pacific in Stockton. Calif., for her master's degree and later married Richard Doi, who is now an assistant professor of art at Southern Oregon college. They have one daughter, Alice. SOC director of informa tion, Hugh G. Simpson, will introduce Mrs. Doi on the Jan. 4 program, according to rirl.. Tl.in I 1 tive of the general extension division. Wall Street Chatter New York (UPD Friday of this week, Dec. 23, is the last chance to take a profit on a regular delivery basis for in clusion in 1060 income lax re turns. The deadline happens to fall on Dec. 23, because in the case of a profit, the delivery date is the determining fac tor not the date of trade. The normal delivery date, of course, is four trading days after the date of sale. The final dale for profit taking comes unusually early this year because Monday, Dec. 26, wiil be a stock mar ket holiday (Christmas).
