BURNED SHIP EQUIPMENT This view
board the fire-ravaged aircraft carrier Con.
stcllation shows the equipment which may
have been directly instrumental in causing
the outbreak of the fire. Preliminary reports
by the Navy indicated that the fork-lift
truck, right, apparently sheared off the
valve on the 500-gallon lank, left, which
was filled with dlcsel fuel. The fuel is be
lieved to have been ignited by a welder's
arc. However, testimony given by Lt. Vito
Milano before the Naval Board of Inquiry
indicated there was no evidence the valve
of the tank had been sheared off.

Conversations of
Pilots, Towers
New York - (UPI) - Two air
port traffic operators desper
ately tried to reach a United
Airlines jet and a Trans World
Airlines Super constellation
seconds before they collided
over New York in aviation's
worst disaster, a transcript
showed today.
The accident Friday killed
134 persons and caused a
major fire in Brooklyn where
the DC8 jet crashed after the
collision.
The recorded transcript of
the radio conservations be
tween the planes' pilots and
airport traffic control workers
involved in the tragedy was
released Wednesday by the
Federal Aviation Agency.
Warning HaveaUd
It revealed that Laguardla
Airport warned the TWA
plane that the jet was heading
toward It, but there was no
acknowledgement from the
Constellation.
It also showed that Idlewlld
Airport failed to pick up the
jet on radar and lost radio
contact after receiving only
one message from the jet.
There were indications that
the jet may have been off
course even before it made
contact at Idlewlld where it
was scheduled to land, and
that the pilot did not know
he was off course because of
the position he reported.
The frantic moments of the
New York collision Friday of
the giant UAL DC8 and the
TWA' Constellation, the worst
accident in aviation history
with a death toll of 135, are
words on mimeograph pages
today.
Another Victim
Wednesday night, as the
recorded conversations were
being released, the accident
claimed another victim. Dr.
Jacob L. Krook, 64, Brooklyn
dentist, died in a hospital. He
was critically burned when
the DC8 plunged onto Brook
lyn and became the seventn
ground victim of the accident.
The last moments of tne
two planes were revealed in
words spoken by, persons di
rectly involved In the tragedy
- the pilots and the airport
traffic control experts.

QUESADA DEFENDS ACT
. Washington - JPD - Federal
aviation boss Elwood R. Que
sada, lashing back at a grow
ing band of critics, says his
announcement of preliminary
findings In the New York air
disaster was necessary to pro
tect passengers and "restore
public confidence" In air
liners. Quesada wrote William A.
Patterson, president of Unit
ed Airlines, that he was jus
tified in issuing the evaluation
because he had an obligation
to determine Immediately
"whether the facts call for
prompt safety measures on
our part to protect the public
from a recurrence of such an
accident."
Patterson charged Tuesdy
that the head of the Federal
Aviation Agency had implied
the United pilot operated his
jetliner in a careless manner
when Quesada said the plane
was 11 miles off course, and
had not followed a prescribed
"holding pattern" over Jer
sey. Qucsada's announcement of
the preliminary findings aft
er a meeting with President
Eisenhower Tuesday also
drew criticism from Clarence
N. Sayen, president of the
Airline Pilots Association,
Capt. John McDonald, veteran
accident investigator and safe
ty expert, and by inference
from G. Joseph Minetti, Civil
Aeronautics Board member
who will head the investiga
tion of the New York tragedy.
