WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21. 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE. Russian Space Ship Rocket Tests Finished; Missiles Mass-Produced London -WPD- The Russians have completed tests of a rocket capable of boosting a 10-ton space ship into orbit and are mass-producing mis siles of the type they say downed Francis G. Powers' U-2, it was reported today. British experts skilled at evaluating the scantiest scraps of information about Russia placed this interpretation on the report on Soviet rockets appearing in the new edition of Jane's "All the World's Aircraft." , The air annual was able to assemble only three pages of data on Russian rockets, most of it culled from Soviet publi cations, against 34 pages on U.S. rocket developments. Jane's also noted "persis tent reports" that Russia has submarines capable of launch ing nuclear missiles while sub merged. Pilotlesi Plana European military writers were interested in Jane's re port that the United Stales is developing a pilotlcss plane which could be used in germ and chemical warfare. Jane said the drone, designated as the SD2, is being built for the U.S. Army by the Aerojet- General Corporation. It is smaller than the small est light aircraft, Jane's said and could carry more than 200 pounds of germ agents as much as 115 miles. Experts said the range undoubtedly could be increased if neces sary. The SD2, said Jane's, is des ignated to be launched by two rocket boosters from an Army trailer, to be directed by re mote control and to fly at a speed of 345 miles an hour, Both the aircraft handbook and other sources believe the long range rockets Russia fired into the Pacific last year are designed for use either as space boosters or weapons. One of these rockets is said to have traveled 8,000 WITT- . J Where do you stay in PORTLAND? AT THE HEATHMAN w'tn FRf-R.yP.SLf. Moon Landing Next Item British authorities believe the rocket could boost about 10 tons of satellite or space ship into orbit or land a lunar laboratory on to the moon. One British expect recently on Russia, Patrick Moore, is certain a moon-robot landing is the next big item in the So viet space program. The same rockets could be used for manned space flight since they could orbit a cap sule roughly twice the re ported weight of the heaviest satellite yet launched by the Russians. As potential weapons, these rockets apparently have not yet superseded the Russian T3 intercontinental ballistic mis sile described by Jane's as a three-stage liquid - propelled rocket weighing about 300 000 pounds. "Test firings of the ICBM over long ranges have been detected frequently by the U. S. radar listening post on Mount Samsum In Turkey, Jane's said, "and adaptations of this weapon are said to have been used to launch Rus sia's IGY (International Geo physical Year) sputniks." In the manned aircraft sec tion of Jane's, as well as in rockets, the scope and diversi ty of American activity swamp the known Soviet ef forts - but the Russians ap parently have made some im pressive achievements in those fields in which they are press ing ahead. Almost All Cuban Judiciary Said To Be Underground Telephone CA 8-5212 Portland, Oregon Miami, Fla.-IUPII-An exiled Cuban Supreme Court justice said today that almost the en tire membership of the Cuban judiciary has gone underground. Former Judge Francisco Alabau Trelles, 35, said it was the desertion of the judges which prompted Fidel Cas tro's announcement today that 17 supreme court justices have been fired, and that the governor will reorganize the lower court system. Freedom Said Gone Alabau Trelles, who arrived in Florida, in a small boat Dec. 12 said "all freedom" of Cuban judges to administer justice "disappeared" about four months ago. He said the Association of Cuban Judges decided then to oppose Castro. He said 522 of the 528 members agreed with the plan1. It called for them either to go underground or leave the country, the refugee judge said. The plan was upset when Castro ordered the Supreme Court to censure the chief justice, Emilio Menedez. Of the 30 justices on the court 1 :.-hdakiiiiiti. 1 n - ir.rf M 3 1 finn.iririif V. ' You iwutuwt icluiU- (jOottt eiecfoic keat ..." JAMES L. Tipped Off to Plan This forced Menedez, Ala bau Trelles said, to take refuge in the Argentine Em bassy. And this tipped off Cas tro to the judges' plan. Alabau Trelles said he de cided to try to get out of Cuba and direct the efforts of the other judges to escape. After two unsuccessful at tempts to flee, he escaped in a boat and arrived in the Florida Keys Dec. 12. Sheep Receive Grazing Approval Portland (UPD A herd of sheep in Coos county - ac cused of eating trees - have a court's permission to remain on government property for the time being. The ruling was handed down Tuesday by U. S. Dis trict Court Judge John F. Kil kenny, who refused to grant the government's request for a no-trespassing Injunction against the sheep. Defendant In the case is Howard Lealherman, presi dent of the Coos County Sheep Co., Inc. Leatherman holds several government grazing leases, and, he admits, his herds oc casionally wander onto ad jacent reforestation projects. The controversy started when U.S. Forest Service men contended the sheep not only were grazing on grass, but also were dining on newly planted Douglas fir trees. Leatherman said the trees that were destroyed, died from natural causes. Judge Kilkenny said he would take the matter under advisement until May. In the meantime, he suggested, Leatherman and the govern ment might work out leases farther away from reforesta tion projects. (NOT FIRE) Straus Reelected ASC Chairman Allmrt I. Klrans.
